This is a nice book. If I had paid $40 for the book I would have been happy with it. At $95 ($150MSRP!?!) it is absolutely not worth it. Basically this is another scholars flag planting regarding the Velasquez's oeuvre, staking his claim to an authentic list of originals as he sees it. I have no doubt that his reasoning is fine, but as an art book for lovers of Velazquez, this is a most inadequate book. Most of the paintings when printed in full are relegated to serving time on the page with the authors wordsmithing. The result are less than satisfying reproductions. (Read: small) There are a fair number of detail images that utilize a full page, but these are not enough to justify the cost of the book. The images overall lean to the colorless side. Still the best book to own on Velazquez is Taschens reprint of Lopez-Reys two volume raisonne. At $200+ (1/08) it is well worth the price. Supplement this with the still available Technique of Genius by Brown and Garrido and you have a life time of material to study.

This is an up-to-date account of the whole Velazquez canon by a Spanish scholar that offers, with just the right words, an insightful essay on the artist, his world and his works. The book, beautifully printed in high quality paper, without that artificial shining that misrepresents paintings on most art books and admirably designed in Brugge (Belgium), is a fitting celebration of "the painter of princes and prince of painters".
