Henry Pearlman (1895-1974) made his fortune in the cold storage and insulation business. His art collection was mainly formed between the mid forties and mid fifties - those were the days when quality art could still be acquired at reasonable prices. His early purchase of a Soutine portrait set him back $825 and his Cezanne acquisitions would have been at bargain basement prices compared to the astronomical figures being paid nowadays (e.g. a reported $250 million for a card players oil painting!).

This catalog of 50 artworks from the Pearlman collection (oils, watercolors and some sculptures) should be an obligatory purchase for the general art lover and those with a particular interest in collectors. The introductory essays consist of Pearlman's writings about some of his collecting experiences as well as a description of his collection and the era during which he acquired his most important works. The bulk of the book consists of illustrations of and discussions about these artworks. The descriptive writings are unusually clear, informative and easily read.

One of the special joys if this publication is the consistently high standard of the paintings and watercolors. Additionally the majority of the illustrated works were unfamiliar to me. While it is difficult to single out outstanding examples amongst such a profusion of greatness, the fabulous Cezanne oils and watercolors are particularly memorable.

Finally it must be noted that the printing standards of this book are top notch-good paper as well as high quality and generously sized color reproductions. Buy with confidence!
