Carl August Liner (8 June 1871, St. Gallen - 20 March 1946, Appenzell) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist, designer and inventor. He is sometimes referred to as Senior to distinguish him from his son, Carl Walter Liner, who was also a well known painter. He came from a large family of craftsmen. From 1890 to 1893, he studied basic painting with Johann Caspar Herterich and "en plein aire" techniques with Paul Hoecker at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.

Description: Carl Walter Liner came from a family of artists in Appenzell. His father Carl August Liner (1871-1946) was a renowned landscape and portrait painter. Carl Walter studied from 1937 to 1939 with Émile Othon Friesz at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. In 1998, the Museum Liner Appenzell (today Art Museum Appenzell) was opened in his and his father's honor. This lot consists a Carl Walter Liner (1914-1997 Swiss) oil on canvas painting.
