John Bradshaw is one of the greatest contributors on the "cultic family" and narcissism. You can't have a cultic family without one or more narcissists contained within, and the cultic family and their dynamics are drawn to the larger religious cults at large. Toxic family secrets where everyone is required to adhere to a rigid dogmatic family script, without them even knowing the toxic secret, is one of the hallmarks of the cultic family. The toxic secrets must be cleared, and love and acceptance must prevail.

John Bradshaw has been one of my favorite authors for a number of years now. Mainly because he can explain situations that allow you to see yourself 'in it' so that the information provided helps you along your path. In this book I felt affirmed in the sense that we must tell the truth of our history, family or culture. I have stood my ground in asking, insisting that we learn to tell the truth and that only by telling the truth can we actually be free. Free to love and free to Love!

I like the non-judgmental perspective of this book. Although I happen to believe that holding secrets may cause dis-ease or subtle health issues because we are not fully living in our TRUTH, I do respect the dilemma of holding back information for the sake of harmony and well-being of others. This book presents the choices we have, and suggestions for how to assess when to reveal, and when to keep hidden. I recommend this book simply because it opens up important dialog over the issues of family secrets and how they affect us.

In the end, I have to say it is always best to check with one's conscience, and follow the path to the greatest peace, no matter if you face rejection or abandonment. Our personal health - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual - trumps any other criteria. When we are TRUE to our deepest sense, then we are in a position to give the best help to others. This book is an oldie, but a goodie.

Family Secrets provides powerful tools for understanding the dynamics of families, and understanding how you may have become unknowingly enmeshed in patterns that can persist for generations.

The most valuable parts of the book are the techniques for uncovering family secrets, and the method for bringing all the information together in such a way that it makes sense. These techniques are practical and really work. I made several major discoveries about families I am involved with as a result of this book.

Bradshaw includes many new insights about how families work throughout the book.

Overall, highly recommended.

A great book for all that have been affected by secrets that were prevented from being told. Everyone deserves to know the truth and this book show why secrets can harm people and families.
