It seems that nearly everyone knows a family with an autism spectrum child. Most recent figures suggest that the prevalence of all autism spectrum disorders in the United States is an astonishing 1% of the population in the United States, translating to twelve million parents and grandparents that are seeking answers. There are many books available on how to cure an autistic preschooler, but none on how to raise one to adulthood. These promised cures raise parents' hopes, but most parents will find that they are dealing with a lifelong challenge no matter what they do. I really liked many practical examples in dealing with each age level of the autistic student or child, but I had hoped more information with biblical references would be used. There were some footnotes directing to passages in the bible. I just think more biblical references to support some practices or thinking is even more powerful.

I searched high and low for a book on christian approach to autism and I found the answer in this book. Laura is not just a psychiatrist but she was the mother of a child living with autism. Laura is no longer with us but her legacy lives on. The high point for me is that having a child with autism does not stop a parent from instilling Godly character into the child; as you go for therapy, remember that if you do not train a child in the appropriate way he or she will not turn out good. Autistic or not. Commit your child into God's hand and he will surely keep him. We all need God's grace to raise Godly children. Thank you Laura, may your beautiful soul continue to rest in peace. Amen.

This book was helpful to me as a mom of a young man with Down's syndrome. The discussions helped me understand some of his behaviors and gave me ideas for how to keep peaceful communications between us. I highly recommend it.

I have not find this to be a big help in my particular situation. I probably just need to read trig it again. Maybe there's something in missing.

In the end, what we learn is that Jesus is sufficient to uphold those parents who struggle with the ASD diagnosis, and the reality in daily life. Dr. Hendrickson's faith shines through this work, and I would definitely recommend it to parents of ASD kids, as well as those looking to live the Christian life alongside them.
