His first French book, A SHORT HISTORY OF DECAY (1949), was awarded the Rivarol Prize in 1950. Soon after, he began to refuse every literary prize he was offered. His work is noted for its pervasive philosophical pessimism, and frequently engages with issues of suffering, decay, and nihilism. However, Cioran's pessimism - his skepticism, even nihilism - remains both inexhaustible and, in its own particular manner, joyful; it is not the sort of pessimism which can be traced back to simple origins, single origins themselves being questionable.
Mr Mr. Cioran lived reclusively in a simple Left Bank apartment, frequenting the area around the Luxembourg Gardens and avoiding the company of other literary figures.
Cioran's first major work in French was published by Gallimard in 1949 and he later used French in writing a dozen books of short stories, essays and aphorisms. Mr. He rejected two French literary awards, the Prix Rogier Namier and the Grand Prix Paul-Morand.
