Freelance writer and author, published by Grand Central Books. Optioned by Universal Studios. Second novel, HAPPINESS SOLD SEPARATELY, (2006) is a messy three-way love story.

Elinor Mackey has always done the right things in the right order-college, law school, career, marriage-but now everything's going wrong. After two painful years of trying, Elinor has learned that she can't have children. All the doctors can tell her is that it's probably because of her age. As she turns forty, she withdraws into an interior world of heartbreak.Elinor's loving husband, Ted, a successful podiatrist, has always done the right thing, too. Then he meets the wrong woman at the wrong time, and does the wrong thing. Ted's lover, Gina-a beautiful and kindhearted nutritionist-always eats the right thing, but is unlucky in love and always falls for the wrong men. Soon Ted has to fight to make everything right again. Can Elinor and Ted's marriage be saved? The answer is alarmingly fresh and unexpected as New York Times bestselling author Lolly Winston introduces us to characters as memorable as those of Anne Tyler and Nick Hornby, but who are indelibly all her own.
I snapped this book up because I'd enjoyed Good Grief and parts of the story continue to come back to me, so Lolly Winston's next was a definite buy.

I found each of the characters in Happiness Sold Separately sympathetic, even when initially I didn't believe I would. For instance, given Gina's position as "the other woman" I was ready to dislike her, but found she was a much more complicated and sensitive person than I expected.

Winston presents the issue of infertility very well here and I discovered it was a much more complex situation than I knew. I think parts of this book, too, will continue to come back to me, though I didn't find it as moving or engaging as Good Grief.

Happiness Sold Separately gets a rating of 3 1/2 from me.
I liked this book a lot - maybe some of the actions of characters at times were far fetched, but still the most intriguing character was the woman who wanted to have a baby. I found that she offered the reader an idea of how heartbreakingly sad it is for a woman of 40 to yearn for a child - as an older woman with two children who took child bearing for granted, I found this character's actions and reactions to be fascinating reading - I like this author and bought the book because I read "Good Grief" - I wasn't disappointed.
Lolly Winston is a writer to be reckoned with. Anyone who can make me feel sympathetic to all three participants in a marriage triangle has my admiration. I recommended this book to my writing students because it's so well done -- a worthy successor to GOOD GRIEF -- which was one of my favorite books the year it was published. I'm looking forward to Winston's next book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Has a wonderful ending that was true to the story.
This isn't my usual type of read, but surprisingly, it was good. Kept me entertained! It did peek my interest and kept me wondering what next. Great read!
I finished reading this book and found it pretty much a downer. I had read "Good Grief" also by this author and struggled through to a happier ending, but this book ending seemed ambiguous. I will probably not read any more books by this author.
This book was very depressing and one of those you have to force yourself to get through. I really, really liked Good Grief, but I am sad to say I will be selling this copy back. Perhaps, if you are having infertility issues you could relate better to the plot. The main character in Good Grief was depressed yet able to look at life in a funny sarcastic manner. Elinor is just plain depressed, while Gina is the type of girl you just want to hit. Both Ted and Gina were hard to relate to, although it was a little interesting to get the cheaters point of view especially when he isn't really a jerk.
I love this book.
