The Cotter's Saturday Night is a poem by Robert Burns that was first published in Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect in 1786. Burns wrote "The Cotter's Saturday Night" at his Mossgiel farm, near Mauchline, during the winter of 1785-86. He adopted the lengthy Spenserian stanza form from Robert Fergusson's similarly themed 1773 poem "The Farmer's Ingle" to allow space to evoke his pastoral scene.

This is a vibrant, lively collection of poems crammed with insights into who we are and the way we live. Filled with surprising twists and laugh-out-loud phrases, these poems are especially memorable for the sympathy and wisdom with which Southwick observes the beauties and sadnesses of our world, and the mysteries at its core to which, even without understanding them, we always respond. I predict that this slim book will never end up on the shelf; readers will want to keep reaching for it to reread and mull over in light of whatever it is they are doing or have done that day.
