Around that date, by chance, I began to listen to his dialogues with Clive James, recorded from 2000 to 2004 for Australia’s ABC Radio. Book-learned wisdom and painful longing are combined in a viscerally honest way; it’s as if . Eliot added a paean to tight jeans in The Waste Land. Bathetic but glorious, and very much in line with one of Porter’s poetic heroes, Alexander Pope, the 18th century master of shifting tone. Porter’s own Fossil Gathering, from Preaching to the Converted, organises this idea better than I can: I am one of the children who with a paperback can break an Ancient with impatient ease

Peter Neville Frederick Porter (born 16 February 1929) is an Australian-born British poet. Porter was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1929. His mother died in 1938. He emigrated to England in 1951, and in 1955 he began attending meetings of "The Group. "Jonah," with Arthur Boyd Secker & Warburg, 1973. "Living in a Calm Country," Oxford University Press, 1975.
