She began publishing in 1982 at the age of 40 and has since published 3 books of short fiction, and 3 novels, including; Missing Child, The Town That Floated Away, The Two-Headed Calf, The Chrome Suite, Ladies of the House and Night Travellers Birdsell was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award, for The Two-Headed Calf, in 1997. She was also shortlisted for the Governor General's Award, for The Chrome Suite.
