Winston M. Estes's 1970 novel entitled Another Part of the House has been a good read, twice. I had recently moved to Texas from California and found myself enamored of anything Texan, especially books by Texas authors

Winston M. The story is set in a small town in the Texas Panhandle during the Depression. Must admit that I feel some connection to the locale of the novel. I had recently moved to Texas from California and found myself enamored of anything Texan, especially books by Texas authors. Last year, I moved to Quanah, Texas, and discovered that Mr. Winston M.

The Reader's Digest Condensed Books were a series of hardcover anthology collections, published by the American general interest monthly family magazine Reader's Digest and distributed by direct mail. Most volumes contained five (although a considerable minority consisted of three, four, or six) current best-selling novels and nonfiction books which were abridged (or "condensed") specifically for Reader's Digest  . But part way through, Mr. Estes' novel, which is manifestly real, moves in on your sympathies which eventually will be altogether appropriated. He'll find readers-another part of the house might be any room, anytime, anywhere. This is the year that Larry Morrison is ten; the year that a man takes fifteen hundred dollars from a bank and commits suicide; and that Larry learns that Uncle Calvin who lives with them, a mean, shiftless and jobless sort, has stolen from his father's drugstore-a little money and a last bottle of Bayer's aspirin.

This book was something that took about a day to read.

It was quite a slow book (on one hand), but it was different to lots of young adult literature in that it wasn't characters who were 40 year olds in the body of 10 years olds/ other adolescents and there was not tons of profanity.

It was a fictionalized biography. Lots of things related to the author's own life. He grew up in Texas. He lived through the Depressions. He had a brother who died at 15 years old.

The author did a good job and had a few catchy turns of phrase. ("A person that fat can't cool off at once. She probably had to cool off in sections" and "PR Burns must have eaten a thousand cookies without stopping. Ginny ran him a close second.')

What does he deal with that might be good for a young reader to know?

1. Death. It is not much different to Bridge to Terabithia. Much cleaner than [[ASIN:0525478817 The Fault in Our Stars.
2. Trifling relatives. (We all have them in our family. No citations needed.)
3. Enabling relatives. (See above parenthetical insert.)
4. The Depression, as see through the eyes of normal people. (By the time my sons are old enough to read, maybe there will be several 2008 Crisis books written for adolescents.)

Verdict: Worth the time (1 day read) and worth the second hand purchase price.
It was a wonderful story about earlier days in West Texas. All of his books are based in Texas and very homey. Some are funny in a way that uses typical hometown humor.

Great book and fast delivery!
A well-written look at a small town in North Texas during the Depression. The story is entertaining although some developments were too predictable. The author does a great job of capturing the lives of his characters and the impact of the Depression on them, and of conveying the "feel" of living in such a place at that time. The book will be especially appealing to anyone who grew up or lives in or near the Texas Panhandle or other parts of the Plains.

I first read this book more than 20 years ago and was completely mesmerized by its style and story. I still have my well worn copy, which I have reread several times over the years. There has never been a book I have read that has transported me so completely and touched me so deeply as this. From the well written description of small town Texas life in the early part of the 1900's, to the heartfelt truths about family and love, this book is, in my estimation, worthy to be called an American Classic.
