I feel like the audience for this book is somewhat limited by its palpable slant but I imagine Hubbard fans or a certain open-minded class of readers will find this worthwhile reading.

In 1908, the American writer Elbert Hubbard published a putative biography of Hypatia as part of his series Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Teachers. Despite its claimed biographical intentions, the book is almost entirely a work of fiction. In it, Hubbard relates in great detail a completely made-up physical exercise program which. In fact, men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth–often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you can not get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable.

This book is collection of short biographies (see the title) of several prominent philosophers as Mr. Hubbard saw them. He gives us a look into their personal lives - what they were like as he sees it - but only a sparse amount on their philosophies.

I feel like the audience for this book is somewhat limited by its palpable slant but I imagine Hubbard fans or a certain open-minded class of readers will find this worthwhile reading.

A philosopher reading this might be turned off by some of this book's more outrageous pronouncements (Socrates was the first New Thought philosopher? and things of that sort) but will likely find many of the anecdotes amusing and many of this book's thoughts worth holding on to.

As far as how outrageous he gets, I can't really say as I'm not well-versed in these personalities and their corresponding philosophies; however, the reader would be well-advised to take the author's remarks "cum grano salis."

I wouldn't consult this as a first resource if you're trying to get to know your philosophers but if you've already got your foot in the water and know your way around a little bit then this might not be a bad book for you to come to.

But if you're looking for a more inclusive and less idiosyncratic (i.e. you're less interested in Hubbard and moreso in these philosophers as you'd hear about them in school) journey through philosophy, then this other book might be the better choice: A Journey through Philosophy in 101 Anecdotes

P.S. But I can say one thing with confidence: this author sure knows how to turn a phrase! I'm reminded of stories of Abraham Lincoln having an anecdote, idiom, or joke ready for every situation. Hubbard's like that - if nothing else, you could certainly enrich your rhetoric by perusing this book.

I love this book! It's gorgeous and came in good condition for a book of it's age. It's a fascinating read getting to view these places from the eyes of someone who visited them from so long ago, as well as to imagine from the view of the inhabitant the author writes about. A great list of women to learn about and the book was well written.

Fun to read about the lives of history's musicians. They were like today's rock stars. The author is passionate about this subject.

One of the best kept literary secrets of the 20th and 21st Century. These vignettes should be read by everyone - better than cliff notes. Elbert Hubbard's editorial comments are priceless!

Anyone who's interested in great love stories will enjoy these. I appreciated the insight into some famous names that I knew little or only partial information about. It's written in somewhat archaic, flowery English, though, so some of it is slow going unless you have a good vocabulary and are OK with run-on sentences.
