Later, Radosh turned his attention to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

Later, Radosh turned his attention to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Radosh's political views eventually began to shift towards conservatism and his work as a historian has been characterized as being of a conservative variety. Currently employed by the Hudson Institute, Radosh has also published books about the activities of Joseph Stalin's NKVD during the Spanish Civil War and the foundation of the State of Israel.

Very thorough and fair book by Ronald Radosh, who is the subject expert. Joyce Milton is a writer and reporter who came to the subject later on. Although Radosh makes it clear that he believes Rosenberg was guilty, his book is not a polemic, but a far more careful study. The only thing I would fault it for is the lack of footnotes or numbers for endnotes. There are endnotes, but they are only associated with page numbers, not paragraphs or sentences

Future discussions about the Rosenberg case, at least those that are reasonable, will have to begin with the historical fact that Julius Rosenberg was guilty

In 1951 Julius Rosenberg and his wife, Ethel, were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage by giving the Soviet Union notes on, and sketches of, the atomic bomb. Future discussions about the Rosenberg case, at least those that are reasonable, will have to begin with the historical fact that Julius Rosenberg was guilty. OUR HOUSE IN THE LAST WORLD, by Oscar Hijuelos.

Based on extensive research in government files, papers, unpublished memoirs, and numerous interviews this account chronicles the history of the Rosenberg spy case

I found this book in a used book store. I had heard of this case, but never read about it. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were accused of being instrumental in a spy ring that stole U.S. nuclear and military secrets and provided them to the Soviet Union. They were executed in 1953. The author seems to be very thorough and even handed to me, and has written the definitive book on the subject which he updated in the 1990's when records from the former Soviet Union became available. The author believes the Rosenbergs were guilty and evidence released since then, along with confessions from accomplices even as recent as 2011, has led even the Rosenburg children to accept this as a fact. Still, the execution of the mother and father of 6 and 10 year old boys is startling and gripping. Nothing like it has happened in the U.S. before or since. Also astounding is that the most damning testimony came from Ethel Rosenberg's own brother and sister-in-law, David and Ruth Greenglass. The author makes an interesting point when he states that the executions probably wouldn't have happened if the case had been delayed a year. By that time, Earl Warren had become Supreme Court Chief Justice, the Korean war had ended, and Joe McCarthy had been censured in the Senate.....the climate had changed.

The scope of the spying unveiled by the author was stunning. It is a wonder that a number of the other participants in the conspiracy were not put to death as well. The author explains that it was the fact that the Rosenbergs wouldn't confess and name names, that set them apart from the rest and sealed their fate. Some weak points in the book are the lack of photos (thank goodness for the internet), the lack of a timeline, the lack of a glossary on the many players (it gets confusing after a while), and the lack of an epilogue to recount what happened to the individuals involved. Still, I strongly recommend the book. Radosh is the recognized expert on the Rosenberg affair, and he tells the story well.

There are endnotes, but they are only associated with page numbers, not paragraphs or sentences. I understand that footnotes would have made the book seem more academic and perhaps cumbersome for some people, but I think numbers in the text should have been there to point to sources for a book like this, whether footnotes or endnotes. As it stands, the text is somewhat disconnected from the mostly primary sources. Other than this one issue, I would say this is a great book, and despite this I would recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about the subject in detail.
