For the first time, Adams, reputed to be the power behind several national candidates and sitting representatives, speaks on his youth, primarily on events leading to his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps and his subsequent combat tour in Vietnam. Through vivid narration, readers will be taken to the battlefields of Vietnam and witness what it was like for ""a poor boy to go to a poor boy's war"". Leaving Brogado virtually takes readers into one man's comer of the world in 1967 and '68."

This is a very captivating book about the lives of 2 young men who leave their small Texas town and go off to Vietnam together as Marines.

The book is extremely well written and will put you in the dirt and jungle with the characters almost as if you were there. The plot will keep you riveted to your book and will keep you up way past your bed time wanting to read "just a few more pages".

The Author, Marshall Harrison, is a very highly decorated Air Force Pilot who truly knows his subject matter and how to convey it to an audience. He is sadly no longer with us, but he has left us with a wonderful set of books as a legacy.
Amazon carries the author's other 3 books and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF THEM.

Anyone who would like to know what service in Vietnam was like for a fresh Marine recruit should read this book . My father served as a FAC pilot and had Marshall Harrison's book " A Lonely Kind Of War" in his library. After reading it six years after his passing , I new what his service was like . Now I know of Marines service . I now have a deeper respect for all who served . Now I must read "Cadillac Flight" and "The Delta".
God Bless all who served and are serving now .

I was amazed to read the author's bio and discover his service background in the Air Force. His description of Marine Corps boot camp and training were real enough to have only been related by a "Marine". The narrative of growing up in hard scramble Texas could only have been told by one who had lived it, and further pulled the reader into the experience. This book was a "page turner" and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I will seek out other works by this author.

Frankly, I didn't have high expectations of this book when I finally picked it up, blew the dust off of the cover and began to read. After the first few chapters, I was ready to put it aside and shift to something else. But, I had too much time invested by then and continued to read. It was one of my finest decisions. As I got further into the book I became more and more enthralled. Leaving Brogado is worth every minute of your time. I'll not give away any of the details, but rather just encourage you to read this fine piece of literature.

This is one well written book. It's a knockout. You are immediately drawn in to "Beau" and gripped by his hard life near poverty in a tiny town in Texas. He comes from a hard working single parent (father) family who was also a Marine in WWII. Simple, honest and confused was Beau in youth until he enlists. This changes his whole life, just as you'd expect.

Great transition as he writes abouts boot camp, then off to war. In Vietnam, he fights two separate wars, the enemy and his eventually one of his best friends. He also becomes one terrific Marine. This book deserves five stars!

Excellent book about Viet Nam. Mr. Harrison tells excellent stories, fiction or nonfiction. I highly recommend ALL of his books since he was there in the thick of it, he was a highly decorated serviceman, & a credit to our country. Please don't pass this one up.

I enjoyed this book because it takes two young guys from their homes in the Midwest revealing their thoughts and emotions and choices going into and coming home from the Vietnam war. I think the end really connects with the reader, and remember , these are just young men as they have become from war. Gruelling encounters, fear and courage. I really enjoyed it. Lest we forget, and for the author, you live on.
I have read all of this author's books and enjoyed this one as well. While all the books reflected the Viet Nam war, this book departed from the aviation theme of the other books and depicted the travails of the marine grunts. This was both a very good, and at times, a very sad story. In that respect it was so reflective and true of the actual stories and tragedy of the actual war.
