STINGER by Robert Mccammon is simply 80's horror F-U-N! With the entire book taking place over the course of one night, it's a great example of the horror being written during that time. This is the story of a duel alien invasion-one alien crashed on earth due to a ship malfunction, (Daufin) and the other a bounty-hunter come to track the first one down, (Stinger). All of this takes place in the town of Inferno, in west Texas.

In Stinger, Robert McCammon Welcomes us to Inferno and Bordertown, two racially divided sections of remote and withering Texas mining town. There really isn't much work now that the mine has closed down. The school year is winding down and as it locks its doors for Summer, it may be for the last time. Not much else is happening there outside of the rival gangs (the Renegades and Rattlers) constantly at war with each other. This changes when an alien space craft crash lands. We soon discover that the alien (Daufin) was being pursued by another alien being; a bounty hunter (Stinger) that begins to kill everyone the the town and replace them with replicants to do his bidding. Stinger is very well written Sci Fi horror with finely crafted characters and touching moments. This is the third book I have read by McCammon (I also read Boy's Life and swan Song) and I have enjoyed all three. Recommended. 4/5

Always good to read a Robert McCammon tale and this is no exception! Good guys, bad guys and most of all Stinger, a true monster. It would be easy to pick the logistics apart but a story's main job is to entertain and this on does just that. A small dying Texas town, a couple of gangs, a teacher and his family and an unassuming alien that just wants to go home...but not ET-like. Far from it and the Stinger is a bounty hunter that looks like a scorpion but MUCH larger and has other plans for the homesick alien and the people that are trying to help it!

Wow! I just finished this book and it was so hard to put down. There are many characters in this, but each are clearly defined and I loved reading about them all. The story was amazing and there were moments where I actually said "No!" "Stop!" several times, especially toward the end. Thankfully there were no "left field" saves. When something happened, it happened. I am trying not to be too specific because there really is so much I want to say about this book. If you aren't sure, do yourself a favor and get this book. Or, at least the kindle version. The price made this a steal for good reading!!!! Enjoy!!!

I read this book years ago and it rests in the original cover in my library and now in my Kindle. It is rare that I read a book over and over. Stinger is a movie waiting to happen. What more can an audience/reader want in a Sci-Fi/Horror story because this has it all. A horrific nightmare of an alien bounty hunter who doesnt care about anything then finding out who his bounty has bonded with and capturing the fugitive peaceful alien who has hidden in a lovely character of a little girl. The fugitive only wants to escape to save his/her people never meaning to bring brutal death to this town that has become the killing fields.

This is a must read for anyone who enjoys sci fi/horror because even though you are reading this book and not watching a movie this book keeps you on the edge of your seat as the deadly uncaring alien brings to mind Jaws because you never know what is lurking beneath you but you know your about to die.

Equally favorites of mine by him. Bethany's Sin, Wolfs Hour and my very favorite of his Swan Song which I regard an equal if not better to Steven Kings The Stand. All would make for some great movies.

PLEASE someone turn this book into the Sci Fi Horror movie which it screams for.

Robert McCammon is one of my all time favorite authors & I am sorry that he doesn't write the same kind of stories he used to write. I am going to read the newer one from last year, The Five. The reviews are either love or hate - didn't see much in between. The newest, River of Souls, sounds more promising. I had read this book a long time ago & don't remember it as well as Swan Song & Boys Life. I have read each of those two times & enjoyed both. Maybe The Five will get things back in order for the author to continue writing wonderful books.

I have just read this book for the second time after reading it years ago. This time I liked it much better than the first time. Maybe because it is so hard to find a good McCammon book anymore. This book is like reading a movie. You can see it as you read it. It is so full of action that it actually has a physical effect. Most of the characters are well developed. I thought the author could have done more with Jessie & Tom, but there were so many others that it didn't hurt the story at all. After hesitating to read it again, I am so glad I did.

I was really looking forward to a real good 80's horror with monsters and violence. The monsters and violence were there but there were too many inconsistencies that I could barely finish it. The thing that bothered me the most was the "good" alien learned about us by reading through the encyclopedia but then constantly would confuse simple things with more elaborate descriptions of the article leaving the humans to wonder what it was talking about. I'm not sure if this was for comedic effect but it didn't work for me.

Wasn't sure about this book. I enjoy first contact stories and this one did not disappoint. Exciting and weird it held my interest until the very end. Characters were well thought out and believable and the bad guy and was suitably bad. Recommend.
McCammon never fails to entertain and this book is no exception. It's a well-crafted yarn .... abeit a bit long .... with believable characters and storyline. Of all his books, and I've read just about all of them, "Stinger" ranks in the top five. I look forward to his next adventure.
