Dream Country: A Novel. Written by Luanne Rice. Narrated by Laural Merlington.

Written by Luanne Rice, narrated by Laural Merlington. And they'll need all the strength and wisdom they can find, to learn that you cannot close the door on the past. In fact, sometimes, if you're willing to step through it, that door to the past can lead you home.

Laural Merlington creatively imbues each character with strength, determination, and never-ending love. Merlington reads both dialogue and description languidly, her enchanting, husky voice bringing the listener close to the magic of love and faith that pervades this tale to the very last moment. c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine. No one understands all the complexities of love, resentments, heartaches, and healing better than New York Times bestseller Luanne Rice, whose Follow the Stars Home was praised by People magazine as a story of "heartbreak and redemption." In Dream Country, she once again draws us into a splintered family's search for hope. Daisy had gone to the Wyoming wilderness in search of inspiration for her jewelry making. She found rancher James Tucker, a man with the wilderness inside him. Their life together was close to paradise - until their three-year-old son Jake disappeared and was never found. Her marriage in tatters, Daisy returned home to Connecticut, taking with her from Wyoming two things: her daughter, Jake's twin, and her livelihood, the jewelry she etches with symbols of Indian legend. Wyoming had taken everything else. Thirteen years later, Wyoming wants more. Sage, now sixteen, has run away, and Daisy fears that Sage's thirst to see the land and father of her dreams is driving her westward on freight trains and farm roads. Terrified, her mother flies out to where James Tucker rides the range with a heart turned to stone, still scouring the canyons for Jake. Wary of each other, Daisy and James wait and pray for the safe arrival of their one remaining child. And they'll need all the strength and wisdom they can find, to learn that you cannot close the door on the past. In fact, sometimes, if you're willing to step through it, that door to the past can lead you home.

A Beautiful story of the complicated phenomena that is family, and the power of love and hope and it's ability to heal. Like the Wind River itself, this story meanders and rushes, testing your emotions and challenging your imagination. A story that will stay with you long after it is over. Excellent! One of my favorite books to date. Highly recommend it to readers.

Such an endearing book! Had me hanging on the edge of my seat in some parts. A really wonderful tale of family, mothers & daughters, and marriage.

This was the second book I read written by Rice. It was the first, SAFE HARBOR, that made me want for more! The Secret Hour is better, well, maybe not better, but written from a much different voice. Rather than go into detail about characters, location, plot, etc. - AMAZON does a great job of that - I'll just add that it was the suspense coupled with the building attraction between the two main characters in the book that made this book so hard to put down. If you are looking for a good read, interesting yet complicated character building, romance that builds around suspense, then this is your book. Warning: You will want to stay up each night to read "just one more chapter" before you finish this one!

This was a busy book.... jumping from one character to another, causing me to wonder a few times just who the book was about. Once I got a good start, I enjoyed the characters. I love a romance with suspense, and this book had that with a bit of a twist. The epilogue was quite long, and didn't really give the book much closure.... guess I was hoping for more of a "happy ending." Not one of my favorite Luanne Rice books, but definitely worth reading.

I heard this was a good story from a member of my book club. I did not like the fact that the story had three different scenes and each chapter changed from Connecticut to a ranch out west and then to the car where the people were driving out west. Also it had a lame ending.

I found the characters so boring, one dimensional and typical that even they couldn't get me interested in this unbelieveably corny story. I almost finished reading it (I left about 10 pages of filler untouched) only because I was on a vacation and had lugged it with me all the way across the country. Every point and turn in this book seemed too perfectly timed, almost as if the author wanted to make sure that after the first third of the story you knew exactly how everything was going to turn out in the end. Even worse, each of the characters were so melodramatic that I couldn't stop myself from rolling my eyes from time to time. I thought I would like Luanne Rice but I am sure this will be the last of her books that I'll read.

This was an awesome story, read it years ago in the hardcover edition and just reread it again on my kindle. Wonderfully descriptive of the mountains and a great story of love and family. Don't want to say too much because it will ruin it for you, but you will enjoy it!!! It was hard to put it down and go to bed!!!
Bit too sad for me especially the animals but a good read despite that.
