It was a relaxing, easy read, easy on the mind and spirit, a nice book to read when you want to wind down and visit or revisit, in your mind, the times and years of the Depression. I found the author's characters interesting, enjoyable and real. I was disappointed to have the book come to an end when it did, and look forward to a sequel, hopefully. 2 people found this helpful.

Sidney Bolick, who began his autobiographical memoirs with MAMA'S BOARDING HOUSE, continues his story with TO SOAR WITH THE EAGLES. This 2002 release from Canada's Trafford Publishing chronicles Bolick's wartime service with the RCAF, RAF and U.S. 8th Air Force in England.

TO SOAR WITH EAGLES begins with Bolick stepping off a bus in Ottawa in June 1941 to train as a pilot in the RCAF and ends with his return to the States in late 1944, a seasoned veteran of the B-24 equipped 44th Bomb Group. (Bolick's combat tour ended on 18 March 1944 when his B-24 "Paper Doll" was downed by AAA, Bolick becoming an internee in Switzerland).

Despite flying combat beginning in November 1943, the bulk of TO SOAR WITH EAGLES is devoted to Bolick's training in Canada and subsequent RAF service in England before transferring to the USAAF. So, if you're looking for lots of "8th AF vs. the Luftwaffe" tales, this isn't your book. It is however a fairly interesting tale of how one man eventually got to war.

Bolick admits to some literary license and embellishment in his storytelling; well and good. I'm always amazed when someone recreates events - and conversations(!) - from 60 years ago and claims it's gospel.

In any case, if you're into WWII bomber/pilot stories, you'll want to check out TO SOAR WITH THE EAGLES. Recommended.

Sidney R. Bolick, the author of "To Soar With The Eagles", passed away this week. He will be laid to rest on 20 Nov 2009. I knew Sidney through my wife's friendship. He was a great guy who was very humble and nice. Interesting to talk to and he loved books and poetry.

This book is a great story about his time in service in WW2. He lied about his age in order to get into the Royal Canadian Air Force. After 4 years of flying and teaching flying, he ended the war as a young 22-year old. It is hard for me to imagine going through what he did at that young age.

Salute to a great airman and friend.
