It was muffled, but accentuated by a steady rain. He lay very still, hoping it wouldn’t wake Mary. She was lying on her side facing him, and the blankets were tucked under her armpit. She was lying on her side facing him, and the blankets were tucked under her armpit r was way over on his pillow, and if he turned his head he’d be lying on it. Another satisfying read from Spencer, this one shines as an example of how this author can take situations that would seem cliché in another HR but makes them seem realistic and dramatic in hers. Whether it’s her characterizations or her writing style, she always seems to make her romances down to earth and extremely heartfelt.

I loved all three of our leads. What could justifiably be termed a love triangle, these two brothers and Mary are so practical and earthy that the melodrama is kept to a bare minimum (a refreshing take, I assure you). Each character is unique in and of themselves; they form a tight knit family with undercurrents that every family has. I loved how each character has such a distinctive viewpoint on the world and each obstacle presented to them. I fell in love with all of them.

A plotline that actually made me role my eyes before starting, Spencer actually pulls it off by having such great characters and giving everything an atmosphere of plain country life. The way everything was presented, all out in the open and with much of it fully acknowledged by all parties involved, kept this story from sliding into a soup of dramatic farce, a trap I could see another author falling prey to.

The relationships between Mary and each brother were distinct and as varied as both brothers’ personalities. Jonathan was a dedicated farmer whose first love was to the land but who also had a very deep love for Mary, even if he wasn’t able to express it that well. Aaron was the charming, emotional younger brother who is closer in personality to Mary and more in tuned with her needs. Mary finds herself torn between these two men, both of whom she loves in her own way. It tore at the heart to see her affections swing between the brothers, seeing how her relationship with both could make her happy. It definitely kept the emotional tension up!

The one blip in the book I didn’t enjoy was occasionally the atmosphere would get in the way of the story, if that makes sense. The dogged pace of life on a Midwestern farm and the rigmarole of daily routines sometimes got in the way of the story. Not that the description came in massive spurts of text or paragraphs; far from that. However, I found myself getting bored with the scene setting more than I enjoyed it. Spencer seemed to have a similar problem with another book I read by her, Then Came Heaven .

Despite the over use of scene setting in places, this was a very enjoyable historical romance. The characters are strong, and the relationships emotional as heck. This is another winner from Spencer; I look forward to exploring more from her. Highly recommended for those who love emotional HRs!

I found this book through reading information on the author Kathleen Woodiwiss, my favorite author and inspiration. It is the first book I have read by Ms. Spencer. I will read more of her novels. Her subject was challenging and she created a difficult scenario to resolve. I was impressed at how well she handled the subject. I liked and identified with the characters and the complications of their life choices. As a reader I found the book absorbing. As a writer I was very impressed with her pacing. The descriptions of something as simple as a farmhouse kitchen, the coals falling from a burning log and the stillness in the room, with the pensive mood of the characters, all create a beautiful exercise in slowing down the pace of her story. All the while, as I read the book, I felt the mood of her tale and the understood the lives of her characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thoughtful and contemplative read.

Absolutely loved this book!. Love Lavyrle Spencer - you can absolutely feel the longing through her books! I could not put this down!

The relationship between Jonathan, Mary and Aaron and the ebbs and flows of it, were very interesting, and I feel very realistic for the times. I was riveted, could not quit reading! I soo appreciate the Audible on this as well. Very well done. Please Please redo the Audibles of Lavyrles that are abridged and or faulty - there are so many of us out here who enjoy listening to as well as reading these beautiful books!

This is an excellent book(tho my book is the original hardcover with white flowers on it) & movie with Cheryl Ladd & Lewis Smith as the forbidden lovers, pushed together by her husband Jonathon who is sterile from mumps. this movie aired in Feb.of 1989. I'd just love it if it'd get released on dvd. this along with "The Awakening Land" from Feb.1978 starring Elizabeth Montgomery, Hal Holbrook, Jane Seymore, & William H. Macy, are both excellent movies. tho smaller & not fancy, just great stories. the awakening land just recently got released on dvd & now all i need is for the fullfillment to be released on dvd, tho the vhs tape was a pretty penny. that's my 2 cents.

Jonathan was a very practical man and didn't show affection. Sometimes it seemed like he really didn't care that he was married. Aaron and Mary were friends and got along really well. The situation Jonathan put everyone in was stressful. Mary felt a lot of guilt about what happened, but her and Aaron ended up admitting their love for each other because of the situation Jonathan put them in. It was interesting to read about life back than.

You really ache for the characters. Spencer is amazing at writing feelings and perspectives that may seem unrelatable to a modern woman, but still resonate with love and compassion. This was not my favorite and if it's your first Spencer book start with Morning Glory.

I agree with the previous four star reviews so won't re-hash the substance pretaining to the H/h. Even besides the three main characters I enjoyed reading about farm life of that era. I can safely say I had no idea how difficult it was to simply survive, or the work it took to put the next meal on the table. We can all count our lucky stars we have modern appliances and neighborhood grocery stores. I also had no idea slaughtered pigs had 101 uses.
This is such a beautiful love story. I love Lavyrle Spencer. I have a difficult time finding writing that is equal to hers. This is among her best, along with Vows, and Forgiving. All her books are great reads, but her historicals are unbeatable. I wish she would come out of retirement.
