What should have been a brief interlude turns into something deeper when Lil Lampert meets Grier Dilorio at the Taste of Chicago. Lil is in town visiting good friends Jody Williams and Clark Stevens, and he didn't plan to hook up with a younger man and discover a mutual love for architecture, interior design, and a unique sexual kink that keeps Lil coming back for more. By all appearances, Grier is the quintessential bad boy who loves speed, tattoos, and leather, but Lil slowly uncovers another side: selfless, responsible, and tender, especially for Luca, the son he's had to deny. With Lil's love and support, Grier will make a decision key to opening the door to a possible future together, one that includes fatherhood, something Lil has dreamed of but has never dared to explore.

Architect, Lil Lampert is in Chicago with his best friends, married gay couple, Jody Williams and Clark Stevens, enjoying the annual Taste of Chicago when he meets bad-boy biker, Grier Dilorio. There's an immediate and hot spark of attraction between the two men. Lil is eager to pursue the attraction despite warnings from his friends that Grier is too young and looks rough.

Grier's attracted too, but he has secrets he's keeping -- a special sexual kink and a young son, Luca that he has to deny. Grier's rough exterior is mostly show. All those colorful tattoos and black leather serve as protection. Grier has deep, abiding feelings for his son. He's arranged his entire life around spending time with Luca. Lil being an architect is fascinating to Grier, since he wants to be an interior designer.

Ashling's characters in Taste are complex men, each with their own idiosyncrasies. Lil is in Chicago on vacation, but he and Grier manage to develop strong emotions for each other. Watching Lil and Grier interact with each other and Luca made for an engaging read. This is a fun book to read and the sexual interaction is hot and spicy. Taste is definitely worth 4 stars.

Others have covered the premise, so I will just talk about what I loved. Grier and Lil (Lyndon Lyle Lambert - can't believe I remembered that!) are wonderfully complex characters. From their meeting at The Taste Of Chicago to their HEA, you can feel the chemistry between them and it comes as no suprise that when they get physical, it is HOT. The writing is witty, though a bit stilted in the first few chapters. Once the dialogue starts between Lil and Grier, things are a lot smoother. Pacing is well done. Grier and Lil profess love early on, but you don't find yourself rolling your eyes because they realize that they've only known each other a short time, and the issue is addressed by their friends. Still, what they feel is pretty strong and Lil is both supportive and pushy when Grier needs it. Grier's dad is testament to the fact that when a father loves his son, he can put his own prejudices aside and Grier's son is adorable. I love the 'family' outings, especially the trip to the skyscraper where Lil has a panic attack because he's afraid of heights. The tours of Chicago and San Francisco are so fun-filled and vividly described that I felt like I was there with them.

No one else mentioned it in their review, so I'm not sure if I'm 'spoiling' here, but I'm putting it out there because I would have preferred a warning. A 'unique sexual kink' does not give readers enough warning about Grier's penchant for female undies. Grier's cross-dressing was 'different' as far as romance novels go, and it made for interesting angst when it came to the custody of his son, but it threw me when it first came up. A 6'3, tattooed motorcycle rider in lace panties...because I wasn't expecting it, I had a bit of a WTH moment. Honestly, I almost put the book down, especially when the garter and stockings came out. I will say this, though, I'm glad I stuck with it. This is a really well written book, and one I will definitely read again. If the cross dressing bothers you, you can skip around it. I just feel that people should know it's there so they can make an informed decision.

Book two of the ‘Horizons’ series is about independent spitfire Lil, Jody’s best friend, finding love in the form of Grier, a stunning Italian hunk whose winning smile hides a generous heart and a host of familial problems. This is a wonderful contemporary romance full of pluck, spark, and difficult choices as the two men discover they want more than the hookup their chance meeting promises. I loved Lil and Grier’s story…their rich, spectacular journey kept me awake until the wee hours of morning.

Thirty-seven-year-old Lil is an attractive, successful designer who’s always lived life on his own terms. When he’s lonely any number of men are willing to be his for the night and that is just fine by him; he doesn’t need entanglement. Just because his best friend has found love with football player Clark Stevens and the two men are over-the-moon happy, does not mean Lil wants the same thing. Lil is visiting his friends in Chicago when he happens across the exquisite, twenty-five-year-old Italian hottie, Grier. Grier offers to show Lil some of the town’s finer points and Lil accepts, excited at the prospect of seeing the town through Grier’s eyes. Lil doesn’t expect more than pleasant conversation and a possible hookup with the drool-worthy, man, because Lil has already decided Grier is way too young for him. Grier, however, has other ideas, and after meeting Grier’s young, half-Filipino son, Luca, Lil finds himself getting drawn deeper and deeper into the entangled emotion called love.

More than a simple man meets man romance, this book is a brilliant read because it unabashedly details some tough topics with an unjaundiced and original eye, which added an engrossing realism and a genuine warmth to a super-hot story. Woven throughout the tale are hints of the challenges encountered by cultures that immigrate to America and struggle to adapt to American ways while hoping their children can better themselves. The trials faced by the generations of these children who grow up in America and try to remain true to the expectations of family obligation while opening themselves to the opportunities afforded by America. The strain on men and women from such backgrounds when faced with homophobia from family members in the stead of familial support. And the difficulties a gay man faces when fathering a child with a once friendly, now hostile woman.

All of this and more add beautiful nuances to the engrossing romance of Lil and Grier as they navigate the waters of love. Both Lil and Grier were wonderful to inhabit and I admired both for their brave choices. Grier’s stubborn determination to win Lil, despite Lil’s age protests and Grier’s family obligations, made Grier truly heroic and desirable. And Lil’s take-charge concern for the unfair pressures that Grier and Luca face revealed independent Lil’s heart–of-gold ability to place his own needs second. Conflict, tension, heat, and romance combine to make a fantastic contemporary that is smart, sweet, realistic, and very, very hot!

Thank you, Mickie B. Ashling, for this original and compelling story.

This is a great romance story! Grier is an interesting character - a biker, many tattoos, a big muscular guy who loves wearing female underclothing! Even if you are not into such things - and I am not - the picture that is presented is really hot, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Looking forward to reading the author's first book that also has great reviews.
