Paul Hillier has been a leading exponent of Arvo Part's music for many years now, and this book is yet another delectable fruit of his relationship with the composer and his music. The book is divided into very neat chapters, giving a thorough and systematic break-down of Part's musical career- from his neo-classical student works to his early experiments with serialism (he was the first Estonian composer to write serial music); his period of silence when he sought a new, simpler means of self-expression; and finally his discovery of the "tintinnabuli".

Eight years Danielle's worked for Technical Resources and Information Computing. Her father's happy. His lovely daughter has a career. Her mother just wishes Danielle would get married. Why'd she go to college if it wasn't to find a husband? Her sister thinks Danielle will eventually be a pensioner, one of those people who reminisce about how the good-old company did things. Her friend Julie thinks Danielle should quit. Better Than it Gets is at times thoughtful and laugh-out-loud funny. The book takes on the modern work world, from corporate culture to academia, but is also a search for past promise, family and friendship. It's irreverent and unexpectedly moving. Danielle, Julie, and, of course, Skippy may become your new heroes.
Rose Of Winds
Better Then it Gets is the story of a young woman who must face the reality of what her life has become, and decide what she wants (and is willing) to do about it.

Fresh from vacation, Danielle, an employee with a large Information Technology company, finds herself unable to fall back into a corporate mentality. To complicate things, the office is abound with rumors of lay-offs; she is presented with a job offer she never saw coming, her father is turning 60, and her best friend (who has issues of her own) is coming to visit for the summer.

Along the way, we meet the people, pets, and places that help shape and define Danielle's world. Julie, her best friend; Anne, her infuriatingly irresponsible sister; Dante, her truly lovable and oh-so realistic dog; her parents; her co-workers; and Florida, the state she adoringly calls home. Guided by daily bits of wisdom from her personal hero, Henry David Thoreau, Danielle must discover the truth about herself, her life, and the people she loves.

The accuracy and depth of detail provides a powerful sense of realism, and creates an empathetic bond between the reader and the characters. Placing the story in Florida, Mr. Hillier shows his knowledge of the Tampa Bay area and obvious love for the state as a whole. Using real-life locations and true to life descriptions, the author shows a hauntingly beautiful Florida in all its' hot, humid, ecologically threatened glory. More than the backdrop of the story, it is a subtly laid metaphor for Danielle's life.

This book is a first person narrative of life, of love in all its forms, and of joys and trials of self discovery. A must read for anyone working within the corporate world; doubly so for anyone in IT. Regardless of employment, it is a story that will open your eyes to the world around you, and inspire you to find your true place within it.
I had happy tears in my eyes at the ending and I don't remember a book that made me laugh out loud so many times. The writers wit and ability to capture funny moments on paper are usually reserved for movies... I was so touched by the ending that I'm sure it will impact my life. The writer is possible Jane Austin of our time .....someone that can accurately capture what goes on in the contemporary world, but for most of us we are not able to accurately verbalize it.
Loved it! The humor is indeed "laugh-out-lout" and the messages moving.

A heart-warming read, perfect for the holidays or for someone needing a pick-me-up directional boost.

Can't wait till this author's next effort.
