Something old" is the first line of a traditional rhyme that details what a bride should wear at her wedding for good luck: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe. The old item provided protection for the baby to come. The item borrowed from another happy bride provided good luck. The colour blue was a sign of fidelity. The sixpence-a silver British coin-was a symbol of prosperity or acted as a ward against evil done by frustrated suitors.

Something Borrowed is a 2005 novel by author Emily Giffin. The novel concerns morals regarding friends and relationships. It addresses the stigma against single women in their thirties and the pressure that society places on them to get married. The title comes from a "Something old, something new", a traditional nursery rhyme concerning a bride's attire.

Something borrowed, something blue. Instead I slurped my coffee and pretended that goosebumps hadn’t risen all along my arms. The paint had been sprayed slowly and carefully, which meant that there were blue drips all along the bottoms of the letters. It was like looking at blue blood splatter
