I think that Laura Restrepo is a fine writer and her book Delirium captures the damage that violence does to societies and to individuals. I really liked the construction of the novel which had different voices relating the story and the plot with many twists and turns was compelling. Great literary style but very easy to read (just pay attention to who is talking at any given moment).

Oskar

A mí me fascinó, literalmente.

The entire book is written as a stream of consciousness (meaning that it switches from 1st to 3rd person continuously) from four different perspectives: Aguilar, Agustina, Agustina's maternal grandparents, and most importantly Midas, Agustina's old flame. I've never read a book with this style of writing so I found it incredibly tiresome right from the beginning. However, once you get used to the rythm you can become rather engrossed in the intersecting tales. There's a mix of drug trafficking, intolerance towards sexuality, hypocrisy, denial, and of course madness all throughout the story which does make it interesting. Overall I don't regret buying this novel but the style of writing itself makes the story difficult to digest. The themes of the novel, in the end, are more compelling than the story itself.

Gives you many experiences at once. Craziness, familiy relations, love, Colombias social decomposition due to drug trafficking, cultural decay. All very well written. I was surprised and impressed. A must read.

¡Magistral!
Laura Restrepo has never disappointed me, This book is a masterpiece. It is hard to leave to leave it behind once you start reading it.
