Frank Garvin Yerby (September 5, 1916 – November 29, 1991) was an American writer, best known for his 1946 historical novel The Foxes of Harrow. Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia, on September 5, 1916, the second of four children of Rufus Garvin Yerby (1886–1961) and Wilhelmina Ethel Yerby (née Smythe) (1888–1960). Rufus, a hotel doorman, was part African-American, part Seminole; Wilhelmina ("Willie") was Scots-Irish.

I used to read it once or twice each year. I even wrote to Yerby & he replied with a long & personal letter. This book switches back & forth between then modern day Israel & Europe and the French Resistance to the Nazis during World War II. I fell in love with the characters. I fell in love with the story. I fell in love with how Yerby's writing played on my emotions. I loved his take on love.

Frank Garvin Yerby was an African-American historical novelist. He is best known as the first African-American writer to become a millionaire from his pen, and to have a book purchased by a Hollywood studio for a film adaptation. He later migrated north, first to Dearborn, Michigan, where he worked as a technician at Ford Motor Company, and soon thereafter to Jamaica, New York, where he was employed as an inspector at Ranger Aircraft. Yerby's first literary success came in 1944, when he received the O. Henry Memorial Award for his short story "Health Card", which focuses on the racial inequities faced by an African American soldier and his wife. 1974) A novel by Frank Yerby.
