Bontly writes smoothly, and his y naive Abbot and embittered Sawyer-are strong; but the contrived, hard-to-swallow sex-and-spy adventuring here adds up to little more than middle-aged wish-fulfillment. Pub Date: Jan. 27th, 1988.

The Book of Thomas the Contender, also known more simply as the Book of Thomas (not to be confused with the Gospel of Thomas), is one of the books of the New Testament apocrypha represented in the Nag Hammadi library (CG II), a cache of Gnostic gospels secreted in the Egyptian desert. The title derives from the first line of text. The secret words that the savior spoke to Judas Thomas which I, even I, Mathaias, wrote down, while I was walking, listening to them speak with one another.

Thomas Ligotti is regarded by many as one of the greatest living horror writers. His works have received numerous honors, including three Bram Stoker awards. I first encountered Ligotti's writing in the "Call of Cthulhu" series as "The Last Feast of the Harliquin" (included in this book) and "The Sect of the Idiot" (unfortunately not included in this book). After reading Robert Price's description of Ligotti as a "philosophy of nihilistic zen", I had to try this book.
