This was my first Max Brand book, and I had no idea what to expect or even what the book was about when I picked it up. I'm so glad I did! Way of the Lawless is a Western which kept me up way past my bedtime - it's so riveting I had a hard time finding a good stopping place. The characters are well developed, even the minor ones. The story is well-written and moves along at a fast clip. The ending - well, I usually have a book completely figured out halfway through, but the ending caught me completely off guard.
Young Andrew Lanning made one mistake in the beginning, and now the most feared lawman in the mountain desert, Hal Dozier, is on his trail and will stop at nothing to bring the outlaw Lanning to justice. But is Andrew guilty of all the things he is being accused of? There is one, a pretty young girl, who doesn't believe all she hears about him. Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, who was born in Seattle, Washington in 1882, and orphaned early. Faust grew up in the rural San Joaquin Valley of California. At the University of California, Berkeley, he became a student rebel and a one-man literary movement, contributing to campus publications. Even after his death, new books based on magazine serials, unpublished manuscripts, or restored versions continue to appear so that he has averaged a new book every four months for seventy-five years.
