Mary Mapes Dodge created an instant bestseller with "Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates. It is a tale written for children that adults also find interesting and uplifting. Dodge writes as if she is sending a series of letters from Holland to children in America, and her you-are-there perspective is aided by a nice attention to detail and vivid imagery

To my father James J. Mapes this book is dedicated in gratitude and love. This little work aims to combine the instructive features of a book of travels with the interest of a domestic tale. Holland is as wonderful today as it was when, more than twenty years ago, Hans and Gretel skated on the frozen Y. In fact, more wonderful, for every day increases the marvel of its not being washed away by the sea. Its cities have grown, and some of its peculiarities have been washed away by contact with other nations; but it is Holland still, and always will be-full of oddity, courage and industry-the pluckiest little country on earth.

This is a classic I missed reading in my younger years. The story takes place during a winter in the mid 1800s in Holland and contains a little more Dutch history than some kids may have the patience for, but this old-fashioned story is wonderful and would be a good read through the holidays. I know a lot of home-school mom's like me who would recommend it as a read aloud. I have the Disney movie of it but was waiting to watch it until I finished the book.

Do not buy this edition: as reader unfriendly as it gets. It has small print, no margins. No publisher mentioned! This is a wonderful book, but should be done by a reputable publisher. Disgrace for those who put it together in this format.

I can't believe I didn't read this as a child! If you like historical fiction, and a good story to let your imagination go to work, this is for you. My mother bought it because she read it as a child and just wanted to enjoy it again. She had me read it, she read it and now another friend is reading this book.

Ordered this for my niece. My mother was from the Netherlands and skated in the ice skating races on the canals

From childhood, this has always been one of my favorite stories. I love how through all the struggles the Brinker family endured, they worked hard and got through it together. Even though they may have gotten discouraged at times, they never gave up. Another thing I truly appreciated, they were content with what they had and never resented their friends for having more. They never gave up on their dreams and looking to the future for better days to come. This is such a refreshing book, very inspiring. It has always retained its magic for me from many years ago.

I bought this book for my wife (the '69 Classic Press edition), and she really enjoyed reading it. The Classic Press edition has a lot of extra information to help young readers understand more about Dutch culture and customs, which is very cool. The illustrations by Dennis A. Dierks are good, having the dated appearance of illustrations from that time. Our daughter loves the Disney movie adapted from the book and first watched it at age 3. My wife tells me that the movie is more light-hearted and concise than the book.

I had never read this story before, even though I had heard some things about it. Honestly, it is wonderful to read the descriptions of the countryside and to read about typical boys during that age. I wouldn't want to live there, but the land and the people sound fascinating.
It is a classic but is written in old English so is difficult to read.
