Phyllis York, Ted Wachtel and David York. Now, for the first time in book form, the founders tell how Toughlove works. You need Toughlove if you feel helpless and unable to cope with your teenagers’ behavior or if you feel victimized by them, disappointed in yourself as a parent, guilty because you think you have done a rotten job and are frightened bythe potential for violence in yourself and your children. Remember, you have the right to a night’s sleep without where your kid is-or being awakened by a phone call from the police or a hospital or a drunk teenager who’s stranded somewhere.

Thousand of parents are finding new hope in dealing with rebellious teenagers through Toughlove, a self-help program which has grown to over 800 groups throughout the United States and Canada in less than six years.

Great book.. Especially if you have children who are acting out because of the loss of a loved one or divorce etc.. It's so good.. This is my 2nd book I had to buy for my friend.

Indicative of the social phenomena that accompanied Reaganomics, this book demonizes teenagers who are not squeaky clean. It recommends a harsh approach to kids who do not tow the line. It's all about power, not about help. This book actually recommended ignoring a kid's birthday or Christmas because he "got himself" into a mental hospital. As if these institutions don't have professional standards for ascertaining who is genuinely sick and in need of hospitalization. The object of their program seems to be to break kids completely. Unconditional surrender is their demand before any kind of support can be offered. Perfect for hating, vindictive parents who hate their deviant offspring.

I haven't finished this book. It started out with too many case histories. I'm still looking for the part about how to correctly administer tough love to an adult child.

I'll keep reading until I find what I'm hoping to.

At times I found this book a little difficult to read, but I probably did not really like what it was saying. It confirmed what I knew in my heart all along -- that I needed to let go of my alcoholic son.

When this book was published many years ago, I was able to apply it's principles to my "out of control" teenage sons. Many years later I purchased the second copy for a dear friend who is going through difficulties with his teenager. The information is just as timely now as in the past. I believe anyone can apply these principles to their relationships with a positive outcome. Just be prepared for the situation to get worse before it gets better. Easy read. It works.

The book reinforced some common sense approaches that parents struggling with teenagers with adult problems sometimes forget. Nothing new but helps to read it over and over.
Yes. You need to send this to that woman who never stops complaining about how horrible her kids have become. It is the ultimate wise up and be strong guidebook. Don't be confused and get the other one with more on drug addiction than behavior. This is the original.
