A Doc Savage Adventure

Here we have another of the wonderful double feature Nostalgia Ventures editions of Doc Savage.

Doc takes on the Czar of Fear in a Great Depression tale that truly resonates today unlike anytime since the 1930s. The economy of Prosper City has been devastated by greedy manipulations and Doc moves in with a New Deal to set things right. This is one of the best examples of Doc's immense charity as he literally lifts an entire region out of poverty, buying and reopening every business, and employing all able-bodied workers. Of course the danger is real and ever-present, the set-backs immense, and the frames for murder hammering on Doc's reputation and ability to work. When he has solved the mystery and stopped the crooks, Doc then turns everything over to the back-on-their-feet locals and walks away to find the next adventure. Pure Doc.

As the title indicates the mystery surrounding the Goblin occurs at the World's Fair. This is a great Frakenstein tale entertwined with modern science in a cool ultra-modern setting. I loved this story as a kid, because of the weird science monstrosity of it all. But this version is made even better by the great behind the scenes essay from Will Murray explaining how the writers/editors/publishers were invited to explore and craft a World's Fair story before it opened to help publicize the event. Doc's fame is truly impressive when you realize he was the go-to guy to represent the entire world's vision of The World of Tomorrow. Doc Savage was indeed the Man of Tomorrow.

This is an early Lester Dent story - and boy is it excellent!! Doc and his group stay in the states this time, but things get really bad for him as he has been framed for murder! Check this one out!

I like this book and the xserial movies back in the 30s and 40s where you do not know who the real villian is.

Presumably they changed the title, as they didn't think The Green Bell sounded as cool. Yes, that is the name of the supervillain in this adventure.

A wealthy townsman comes to see Doc, who is somewhat suspicious and quotes him a high price to his favorite charity, a million bucks. Not long after, Monk encounters another group, headed by Aunt Nora Boston, who have a different take on the story. For some reason, the town has been shut down economically, and everyone is out of work.

When Doc takes Aunt Nora's side, and returns to the town with her, he encounters resistance from everyone, and is dodging cops, politicians, and the locals, until they finally realise they have been had. Doc offers them short term jobs as his own little private army to deal with the Green Bell's goons. These guys are produced with some nifty mind altering technology.

A somewhat complicated tale of corruption and real estate, where you are not sure who is actually behind it, until Doc thinks of a trick.

More of an intrigue story, so a good change after the odd pirate tale.

The Czar of Fear is one of my favorite Doc Savage novels. It manages to mix a blend of one of the more believable evil plots with a fair amount of tongue in cheek humor. The identity of the villain at the end should have been obvious, but Dent manages to hide it. In the end, their identity is exposed through a humorous trick of Doc's. Definitely one of the best.
