I couldn’t read my guide book. The lights had been turned off just after we crossed into Czechoslovakia. Evan Tanner was my name. I closed my eyes and thought about the old man in the jail in Prague, and tried to figure out how I would get to him, how I would remove him from his prison, how I would slip him out of the country, and how I could possibly manage all of this without getting myself killed. It was also, unfortunately, the name on my passport.

The Canceled Czech is an improvement on the first book, The Thief Who Couldn’t Sleep. The jokes are funnier, the action tighter, the satire sharper, and the plot more suspenseful. The dedication alone should win some sort of prize for best use of puns as it contains a Czechered past, a pair of Czech mates, and a bouncing Czech. I read most of his adventures over thirty years ago, but I somehow had skipped over this one until now. I'm glad I finally got around to it, because this is an incredibly enjoyable book.

Evan Tanner is one of my favorite series characters from Lawrence Block. I read most of his adventures over thirty years ago, but I somehow had skipped over this one until now.

I'm glad I finally got around to it, because this is an incredibly enjoyable book. The story is very cleverly plotted. In addition to it being a great adventure story, it also has a lot of humor in it.

It was a fun page-turner that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It's actually inspired me to go back and re-read the other books in this series.

I look forward to each of them. I've got a lot of great entertainment ahead of me.

I loved the Canceled Czech when I read it newly published--being a historian at heart and with a desire to visit Prague. I have since LIVED in Prague and the Czech Republic which made me more determined to reread it if I could find it. After discovering it on Kindle with all my other favorites of Lawrence Block's Tanner and Rhodenbarr books----I was ecstatic! NOW, I am reading the Canceled Czech with even greater pleasure, not only because Block's (and my) sense of humor are similar, but because I physically know all the places and 'people' Evan Tanner comes across.

I am a great fan of Mr. Block. If I have missed any of his full length books I am not aware of it. And there are MANY books. It always amazes me how he can write so many diverse books. Just an amazing mind, I guess. And his sense of humor continues to entertain.

This Tanner is an interesting eccentric. Needing no sleep he is conscious more than most people, so can accomplish more. What he accomplishes is very strange, indeed.
