Having read most of Follett's books and enjoying them, I was surprised at the confusion of the writing. This book was so different from his trilogy's and other books, I wondered if he even wrote it. Using the same name Peter for two characters in the book added to the confusion. There are so many names available, why repeat a name as well as having characters with the same letter.
When I was finished with the book, I was sure it was written by a straw, not him.
Very disappointing. Perhaps he learned a lot as he went along as this was an earlier book, but I would say to others, skip this one and move to the more recent books especially his trilogy books, they are great.

Follett is a masterful writer and rarely anyone covers historic references as he does. But once in a while, every author gets sloppy, for one reason or another and writes a book so intertwined, that they forget Occam's razor. This book was in my opinion, his great dissapointment

A typically good Follett read but not as smooth as his usual work. For example, he usually does not include in his stories an apparently unnecessary aside without a connection to the plot ultimately to be revealed with an “oh yes” reader response. In this story, however, Sarah, the sexually unfaithful wife of Julian (who is a wannabe London art gallery owner and who has been financially up-fronted by Sarah’s extremely wealthy and art devote daddy) after Julian discovers and photographs Sarah in an adulterous situation (typically carefully described by Follett), usually weekly joins Julian for dinner with daddy. Daddy has an extensive collection of master pieces including a recently discovered and long lost Modigliani which Julian’s actress friend and her boyfriend want to see. So Julian arranges for the actress and boyfriend to attend one of the weekly dinners. Follett has them all seated at the dinner table after viewing the collection but passingly notes that Sarah is not with them this evening. For the rest of the novel I looked for the significance of Sarah’s absence, to no avail. It wasn’t there; it seemed superfluous if intreging. Even so, this is still a well worked story with an inventive way, if a bit contorted but believable, of faking a painting’s provenance so that two idealistic young artists can seriously prank the art gallery greed that keeps artists from receiving just recommence for their work and get away with it by the skin of their teeth. Those who hunger and thirst for justice will love the ending.
Clever
I was a little leery after reading some of the other reviews. I thought the early novel might not live up to the usual quality of Follett. But it did! Great story and well-written!

As someone who has read 17 of Ken Follett's novels this one falls a little short of his genius as a novelist. It is very short on Ken Follett's standard of mega length novels. The plot is very engaging and when I finished I was left wanting a longer novel on the same subject.

The style of writing does not do justice to other works of Ken Follet's. While I realize that the British often conflict with American grammar, the use of using the same adjective in multiples within the same paragraph, is not good writing. The characters were also difficult to follow; the book is disconnected.
Era
Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors. However, the Kindle version of this book is poorly written. Contractions are broken up often, and possessives as well. The number 7 was used for a capital J in the word "Jesus." The broken up contractions and possessives made for some confusing reading.
Of all this authors books, this one fell just a bit short of how I feel about the usual fast pace, page turning "can't put it down" novels. However, let me say, if you have ANY interest in Italian ART and the exquisite countryside destinations, you will certainly enjoy this
amazingly wonderful journey throughout each page. I look forward to reading each and every publication this author writes. It just happened this was not one of my favorites...but don't let me stop you from reading it. Readers are subjective critics.
