Not-the-Same
I am a law student, and my teacher is the author of this book. He is also the author of the text we are using, so I assumed this would help me understand the material better. I was very wrong. The style of writing is overly complicated. Typically a supplement like this is supposed to help explain in plain language what statutes mean, but this author does not seem to know how to speak to an average human being. Each paragraph has to be reread several times to comprehend. This may be a worthwhile purchase for someone already intimately familiar with corporate tax law who needs a refresher or reference, but it is not any help to someone trying to learn the material for the first time. I am having much more success with the Corporate Tax Examples and Explanations for my purposes.

The book is fairly difficult to judge. I am in the process of becoming a CPA and am using this book in a corporate tax course.

The book is very informative and serves as an excellent introduction to the taxation of a corporation. The information is highly dense and once understood serves as a quick and powerful reference that is much easier to carry than the average accounting or taxation book.

Having that been said, there is a lot to dislike about this book. It took me approximately six chapters to understand how to read the use the book effectively. The information in chapter one is an easy read but dumps you into chapter two, changing from a very accountant friendly style to a very dense and awkward legal style with which I was uncomfortable. Over time anyone can adjust, but I feel it is the burden of the author to provide a book that does not require the reader to review a paragraph or sentence several times to successfully understand.

Also, the author understands that the reading is dense and potentially frustrating. In an attempt to identify with the reader and provide occasional relief, the author tries his hand at humor. However, the only jokes the author can seem to produce are occasional cynical stabs at Congress. By chapter 8, it's already cliche.

While others may disagree, I feel that this book was written for lawyers and not accountants. As both groups need to study corporate tax, there should be a non-exclusive writing standard. I am appreciative that the book forced me to be aware and able to process tax law and interpretation from a legal perspective. However, I feel that South-Western's Federal Taxation books are vastly superior in readability and presentation of material at the cost of size.

Overall I would buy it again but would hardly recommend it.

This book is a very good introduction to basic subchapter C concepts with which every good tax lawyer should be familiar. The subject matter cannot be fully grasped without some effort but this title will make that effort less burdensome. I highly recommend it to law students and tax lawyers who do not have significant experience with subchapter C of the IRC.
