This is a novel of love, loss, deception and amateur detection. Part ghost story, part historical mystery with a visit to the magical beginnings of early photography thrown in for good measure.

Goddard has outdone himself in executing this intricate suspense filled plot loaded with double-crosses, theft and murder as well as the deeper themes of love and loss.

Goddard's talent is such that this acrostic like "puzzle" engages the reader completely....and each time you think you have the solution you are given yet another piece of the puzzle that takes you in another direction.

Although I sometimes became infuriated with our "hero", Ian Jarrett, wanting to shout out, "Why don't you just use the phone and call rather than going there", the resolution of the story came as quite a heartbreaking suprise.

I do not like to give long, in-depth descriptions of the story (why buy the book and read it if every plot point his been disclosed in a review). Suffice to say, readers will not be disappointed and will find themselves caught in the light of Goddard's storytelling genius.

Another masterpiece from Robert Goddard. Complex plot, elegantly unscrambled without doing damage to any of the characters. He is my favorite modern author, quite superior to the late P D James.

Suspenseful story, author is always two steps ahead of the reader. Narration by Michael Kitchen draws the reader into the twists and turns of the plot...which I will not describe, each reader should experience for him/her self as it circles around time.

Don't misunderstand me, Goddard at his worst is better than 95 percent of the potboiler authors out there. But "Caught in the Light" is Goddard at the peak of his writing powers. Taughtly plotted and wonderfully written! I highly recommend this book.

Wow--this book had me guessing all the way. Very well written and you can tell it's from an Englishman. Suspense etc. Do recommend this book!

One of Goddard's best. Pulls you in from the start and holds you to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Photography theme makes for creative background.

Ian Jarret, a photographer, was taking pictures in Vienna when he came across the figure of a woman dressed in boots, overcoat, gloves, scarf and fur-trimmed hat. That's how Ian's affair with Marion Esguard started although both were married at the time. Marion suggests that they make a clean break and a fresh start once they return to England. She lets Ian photograph her naked on their bed after passionate sex.

Back in England, Ian declares to his wife Faith that he doesn't wish to live with her anymore and leaves her as he is about to meet Marion again. But then he discovers that the films he brought back from Vienna are blank and exposed as though in a deliberate and calculated act of destruction. In a subsequent phone call Marion admits having sabotaged the films and declares not being able to see Ian again for obscure reasons.

And so begins a wild chase for Ian after the woman he loved so much and after the secrets that lie behind her strange existence.
Robert Goddard is an exceptional writer who has the ability to make you question the things in which you may or may not believe. His only downfall here was that he almost made the cast of characters too large to keep track of, especially when one of them keeps using different names. However, his description of Eris Moberly's/Marian Esguard's fugue states and forays into the past is so believable you can almost conceptualize being there. The characters and events are so intricately woven you sometimes can't tell where one ends and another begins. Definitely not a fast-paced thriller, but a book to be read slowly and savored right to the last page.
