I had read other books by Martin Edwards before starting the Harry Devlin series, and at first I believed that Harry was not quite as interesting (being somewhat morose) as other characters by Edwards. However, as I've come to 'know' Harry, he is a much more complex person than at first reading, and there are reasons for his thoughts and behaviors that make him ever more interesting. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this book, and the one before it as well, is that Harry remains a moral man and does what he feels is the right thing - a thought I find both endearing and hopeful. The people he defends are not always worthy of such trust and expenditure of his talents and time, but the fact that he continues to try and behaves according to his beliefs makes him ever more interesting

I'm hooked on the book series now. Even though it takes place in the 60s, it's still relevant and it's nice to go back in time as well

I really like the Lake District series, so I thought I would give these, mostly earlier, books a try. The story is ok, but the main character, Harry Devlin, is not as likeable as the main characters in the Lake District books.

In the Liverpool area, more because of Detective Bolis' interest in him as a prime suspect, Jack Stirrup of Stirrup Wines asks his solicitor Harry Devlin to learn what happened to his wife Alison, who vanished. Harry begins making inquiries as he tries to trace Alison's last known steps though he wonders if his client simply disposed of an unwanted spouse. As he begins making progress, the investigation takes a bizarre spin when Claire, Jack's daughter from his first wife, also turns up missing.

At the same time, Harry looks into the Stirrup family; The Beast stalks Liverpool raping women. While Harry finds himself attracted to advocate Valerie Kaiwar whom he meets at the Law Courts, he ponders if there is a link between the missing Stirrup females and the Beast as he starting to believe the rapist is somehow involved.

This is an interesting English investigative tale that stars a likable hero struggling with a case in which his client seems to be hiding things, the cops wants him to stay out, the prime culprit appears to be a rapist, and worst of all he is in love. All of this and more blends nicely together into a delightful whodunit that will please those readers who enjoy the star to be of a skeptical suspicious mind trusting no one including his heart.

I have enjoyed more than 10 Martin Edwards novels. His language and brilliant descriptions of the time and surroundings adds so much to the stories. The history and subtle romance are like a continuous peeling of the onion leading to anxiousness for "what is next?"
