I see you're familiar with the drill. The psychiatrist, a slender blond woman in her early forties, looked up from behind a metal desk bare except for a Dictaphone, a notepad, and a manila folder. Any chance of getting these things off? The prisoner rattled his fetters dramatically. Slight, an inch or so below medium height, he appeared to be in his late twenties. The psychiatrist glanced up at the deputy, who shook his head. Not if you want me to leave you alone with him.

Breathtaking and suspenseful, yet leavened with a perverse and quirky humor, When She Was Bad examines the terrifying relationship between two hot young lovers who also happen to be coldblooded killers. The Girls He Adored - Jonathan Nasaw. Routine traffic violation, maybe a warning on the seat belt. But when I look in, I see this blond girl, couldn’t have been more than eighteen, she’s sitting straight up holding her stomach with both hands. She’s wearing a white sweater that looks like it’s dyed in overlapping bands of red at the bottom, and she has the strangest expression on her face. Just, you know, puzzled-I’ll never forget that expression.

This is a great serial killer yarn with lots of twists and turns, and it uses the sometimes over-sensationalized disorder of MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) to create an unpredictable killer who can be quiet and unassuming, violent and terrifying, and a range in between, based on which "alter" is in control. The detective (the lynchpin of series like these) is E. L. Pender, a rather rumpled kind of guy who is endearing and intelligent, is engaging enough to sustain a detective series, and Dr. Cogan, an expert on MPD who gets caught up in the killer's swath of terror, is another great character who returns in a later book in the series.

The action is well-written, there is a nice balance between subtle suggestion and outright gore, and the characters are all interesting and enjoyable (likeable doesn't seem the right word for a book like this!). If you like Alex Cross series you would probably enjoy these books as well, and this book is where the series started. I highly recommend all of them, but especially this one and WHEN SHE WAS BAD which feature the same serial killer character as well as Dr. Cogan.
"The Girls He Adored" was the first Jonathan Nasaw novel I had read. This is one of the finest serial killer novels I've ever read. FBI agent E.L. Pender has been investigating a serial killer he calls "Casey" whose victims are all strawberry blondes. When "Casey" kidnaps his court-appointed psychiatrist, Irene Cogan, Pender tracks them to a remote part of southern Oregon. "Casey" has DID, or multiple personalities. Some of "Casey"'s personalities are endearing, and one is am evil killer. The characters are well-drawn and the plot moves along nicely. Jonathan Nasaw has written a first-rate thriller.
I have reread this book sooo many times. It is so sad to think that this abuse of a child really happens and the outcome is horrendous. Mr. Nasaw did his homework (but took some literary licsense too, i think). I also read the sequel. I wish there could be a 3rd book in the Maxwell saga.
It's 1:00 in the morning and I have to get up in four hours to go to work. I just could not put this book down and finally decided that I would have to finish it before I can fall asleep. This is the best story I've ever read integrating and deeply describing in layman terms the multiple personality...and making each alter a real person with strong personalities. Absolutely fascinating and compelling read. I highly recommend it for lovers of psychological thrillers.
Cudos to Mr Nasaw. I often look for well written, edge of the seat books, that have a slightly darker tone to them. His writing style is similar to James Patterson, but with a dark twist. I have read Shadows, this and When She Was Bad, all of which were wonderful reads. I like the slight erotic undertone.
This is one of the best books I've read. It has all the elements of a great read - scary plot and great characters. I've given this book to friends to read - we all agree this is a top 5 book.
I highly recommend this book. Serial killer seriously complex & twisted. I can't wait for next read from this author...Jonathan Nasaw
which I do not recommend reading while feeling down. Trust me, you will need all the cheerfulness you can gather - in order not to feel to disturbed, moved (I think I don't mean 'moved' positively), maybe even afraid?
I think this book deserves to be read and boy, am I glad I'm not a strawberry blonde!
(by the way, I don't want to write about what's going on in the book - what's the point of reading it if you already know what's going to happen?)
