Arthur William Upfield (1 September 1890 – 12 February 1964) was an English-Australian writer, best known for his works of detective fiction featuring Detective Inspector Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte of the Queensland Police Force, a half-caste Aborigine. PAN Books ltd: london and sydney. His eyes were dark and his hair almost as black as Bony’s. The truck crept up behind him like a stalking fox, and Bony sprang guiltily back when he saw it two hundred yards behind him. He started to run off the road, stopped indecisively, turned as though seeking cover, finally stood and raised a hand for a lift. It was a three-ton truck, with gleaming bumper bars and newly painted red cabin. Bony’s hair was straight and slicked down, the driver’s hair was curly and thick. Trouble behind me could be my business, Bony said, easily.

Just recently started reading Upfield's "Bony" series. Good solid stories set in the wilds of Austrailia in the '20 through the 1950s. Those not familar with the Aussie English may be put off at first-especially since these books were written in a time of some older downunder terms here and there. If the reader finds a need to determine a term, phrase, or word used in these books there are several good web sites that will give help in dictionary style. This is a well written book.

If only it was that simple. So I've docked a half star for th Bony and the Black Virgin is a difficult book to rate.

However my reasons with this book are a little different. I would have given it an extra star for its stark and moving description of the ravages of drought. It was a surprise then that the author declared the drought over and the land renewed with just one major downpour. If only it was that simple. Again, Upfield explains the patience of Bony, gnawing away at every bone in an effort to bring any clue to light. There was also a book, with whose title I associate my dream, Bony and the Black Virgin. On the back cover I read she was a ‘lubra’, this black virgin. The word virgin had LikeLike. Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte is called to the drought-stricken outback for this, his latest case. At a desolate sheep station two men have been savagely beaten to death and it's Bony's job to make an arrest.

The Napoleon Bonaparte (Bony) novels are a lovely evocation of a distant land, culture and time. The audio-books with Peter Hosking's narrations make the Arthur Upfield's Australia come to life.

I marked No violence - but there are deaths.
As the preface warns these were written in the 1930's -1950's when attitudes were different toward women and aboriginals. (These attitudes come into play in the book in regards to miscegenation.)

Bony mysteries are the best! Great description of 1020's - 1950's Australian life and environments. My late Range Scientist husband loved them and the recordings do not disappoint, a great way to revisit an old friend, Inspector Bonaparte.

This is a well written book. I don't care for Romeo and Juliet endings. The book interested me till the end. the author, I think, was sort of trapped into his ending.

This was a Christmas gift for an old friend; one who has everything.
Christmas morning I received a call. She absolutely loved it.
Funny thing about this I was going to order this book but never did. Also different is that the author is from Austrila as is the character. I use to get these books out of the library ages ago then the library not only stop buying the new books (if any) but eventually put them on the trash rack. In the mean time I never received it nor did I order it. So take a tip from me and before you hit the send button go over what you ordered....
