Robert Whitlow happens to be from where I am from originally, so that was an extra bonus. Very engaging book about a handicapped teenager. I enjoyed it very much. Robert Whitlow is a new author for me and I am happy to discover that he is a prolific writer. I can recognize the South in his writing, in some of his characters and in the way he writes, so it was comforting to me to read his books. This book will make you think, and think hard about life as well as challenging your preconceptions about certain types of people. It also will make you very, very angry at times, so be warned. I look forward to reading more of his books. He is very detailed and brings out his characters very well.

He vowed that the day he switched to a gas grill would be the day he joined the Methodist church. Jimmy assumed all Methodists cooked on gas grills. To eat his hamburger, Jimmy first cut the meat and bun in half. He left one half bare-meat and bun only so he could enjoy the meat without other flavors.

I became a believer in Jesus Christ in the last few years and wanted some good clean books to read. Robert Whitlow happens to be from where I am from originally, so that was an extra bonus. I can recognize the South in his writing, in some of his characters and in the way he writes, so it was comforting to me to read his books. This book will make you think, and think hard about life as well as challenging your preconceptions about certain types of people. It also will make you very, very angry at times, so be warned. Robert Whitlow has the ability to pull you in and make you FEEL which is hard to do in this time we live in where people have become so de-sensitized to life. I am not ashamed to say this book made me weep, and weep heavily. It may not do that for others, but it did for me and again made me rethink some preformed conceptions about certain types of people.

More than the words written, it's the feelings, the understanding, the closeness, the heart beat of being loved that kept coming through. At first I thought this would be a dull story but with calm compassion, Whitlow pulls the reader into Jimmy's innocent world. "Do not forbid them to come to Me, for such is the kingdom of God."

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The story was endearing and you are very quickly absorbed in it.A wonderful story of the life of a boy that has many challenges in his life, and as many accomplishments. At times I cheered and more than once had tears running down my cheeks. Many authors could learn a lot by reading Mr.Whitlow. He writes a wonderful, full story and does not have to use filthy language to get it told. I feel that this is a wonderful book and will definitely recommend it to others and post my recommendation on Facebook.

I loved this book. I hated this book. Jimmy, his mother, & his grandfather were all people I "knew" from my hometown, but Jimmy's town has a seedy underside, & for some reason, it & this lovely gentle boy kept bumping into each other. The world does not treat Jimmy as he treats it, though, & that is my quarrel with this book. It's Christian fiction so what happened to the "as a man soweth" plot line? Neither Jimmy nor I were able to reap good out of this book's ending, but there's plenty to like before the finale.

Whitlow is always good. This is about a little boy who is mentally challenged, and how he "smiles" at the world, and how nice people help him. Trouble is, it has a sad ending. BUT, the author has a 2nd ending that isn't sad you can read separately. Interesting way to go. It is a tear jerker in some ways too. It is caring, kind, yet full of suspense and excitement.
