Charlotte Macleod, Alisa Craig. See, Perry had what you might call a fixation, or maybe a neurosis or even a phobia. I don’t think phobia would be too strong a term, though in most respects Perry was sound as a bell. r sign of mental aberration he ever showed was when he let himself get hooked and netted by Evangeline Sawn. That’s the present Mrs. Fairfield, Dittany explained to Osbert. I don’t know if I happened to mention her first name’s Evangeline. You know, the one who bore to the reapers at noontide flagons of home-brewed ale.

I really enjoyed this one. Much of the fun was in the language: the quotes and Canadian slang. I knew who it was going to be for various reasons but it was still fun reading on to see how they figured it out. The denouement was a bit unlikely but the total package was fun and kept me reading.

The Sarah Kelling & Max Bittersohn mysteries are among my favorites; this one is entertaining but somehow lacks the interest of most of the former. It is just a bit too cutesy for me. It is a typical "down home" adventure, albeit in Canada not the U. S., with the young loving couple, a writer aunt who is a character, a homespun sheriff, various quaint townspeople, and a number of newcomers and visitors. A newcomer is employed to become first curator of a new museum to be built in a home left to the town by a not very popular member. Soon after his arrival he is found dead by the side of his home, victim of an accidental fall from the attic. Is it an accident, is it murder. The victim had a phobia about heights, he would never be found near a window or on the roof of the home. The tone is light and humorous, building on the quirks of small town people living a small town life. There is nothing objectionable, just for me, nothing sufficient to make this more than of passing import.

I got a number of this series for about $1.99 each. If I hadn't already purchased them, I doubt I would have searched out others after I read the first one. The stories are good--but the dialog (especially the stilted supposedly Edwardian/Victorian sections) are unnecessary and annoying. If you can get past that--a fairly enjoyable read.

This is the second book in the grub-and-stakers series. The woman's gardening, archery and roving club has turned the house they inherited into a museum. This being a cozy the first curator is found dead. He apparently fell off the roof.
Since the first book, Dittany and Osbert have married. They, along with their maybe a dog, Ethel, solve the case.

Mystery surrounds the new museum. Mr. Fairfield has passed away and others wonder if
it is the patterns on the quilt that leads to his death.
List of characters at the beginning of the book. Clues lead the quilters and others to ask more questions for the investigators.
Liked hearing of the quilts and the block making. Very confusing with all the characters as they are each working on different sections of renovating the museum.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

The Grub-and-Stakers, a gardening club in small town Ontario, receive a bequest--a house full of stuff, some worthless and some quite nice--to run as a museum. The Aralia Polyphema Architrave Museum, to be exact. But before they can get up and running, someone murders their new curator by pushing him off the roof.
Dittany Henbit Monk and her husband, who writes westerns under a pen name, help the local police solve the murder. But first she has to solve an important clue--the bride quilt, embroidered with little multi-colored bees.
I really liked this mystery. It is full of eccentric characters and a fun plot, even a little hint of romance. If you like Mary Daheim's bed and breakfast series, you'd probably like this.
Enjoyed the dialect and characters. Good storyline never did figure out who dun it until it was revealed! Getting more of these books soon!
