He glanced at her over his shoulder, then back at the two fresh graves. For a moment, there was an awkward silence, then he said, "I promised Angus I would come out every day to check on things. not feeling quite up to it ye. I stopped by to see him this afternoon. Best Kept Secret is a 2013 novel by Jeffrey Archer and the third book in his Clifton Chronicles series. The book was released on 14 March 2013 and follows Harry Clifton as he starts a family.

Alexandra Gaither is an attorney who finally has the power to get the justice she needs. Twenty-five years before, her mother had died a scandalous death. Alex believes one of three powerful men murdered her. Each is charming, each is a suspect, and each tries to shield her from his past. But not one of them can stop her passionate search for the truth. Like her mother before her, Alex sparks controversy and excitement in this remote Texas town. Now, as she investigates her mother’s former lover, his best friend, and the father figure to them both, she will risk everything to uncover their best kept secrets.

I should have read the one-star reviews before purchasing; I was relying upon the author's later reputation. Yes, this one is light porn throughout but worse, it's based on a very poor plot and characters are annoying. It does help a bit to remember that it was written in the 1980s, before mobile phones and easy internet searches. But please, how can a prosecutor go to a town to solve her mother's 25-year-old murder and not know that one of the suspects is now the sheriff? Etc. These "surprise discoveries" defy credulity. These types of plot points are amusing on my day-time soap operas which I consider satire basically, but I don't care for them in my novels.

I was very disappointed with this book. I have been a fan of Sandra Brown for a long time and have read many of her books. This book was so focused on giving vivid descriptions of the sexual attraction and behavior between two of the characters, it felt like a trashy novel. In the midst of building suspense, these characters, who were not even likable, were busy having sex. Their relationship was also professionally inappropriate. I would not recommend this book.

Sad, compelling mystery for horse lovers. Trying to find justice for a 25 year old murder wrecks havoc on a small town. Believable characters, entertaining and descriptive dialogue along with a fast moving story line.

In the courtroom, Greg was the bane of guilty defendants, lying witnesses, and orderly judges. He talked too loud, smoked too much, drank in abundance, and wore five- hundred- dollar pinstriped suits with lizard boots that cost twice that much. To say that he was flashy and egomaniacal would be gross understatements. He was shrewd, ambitious, ruthless, relentless, and profane, and would therefore probably carve out quite a niche for himself in state politics, which was his driving ambition. He believed in the reward system and appreciated raw talent.

I doubt I will re-read the story as I found it sad. I do look forward to other works by this author.

I finished the book because it was interesting enough I wanted to know who killed Alex's mother. But come on....a sheriff and the murdered woman's daughter who she thinks the sheriff may have killed having sex after just screaming and threatening each other! It was a constant theme. It was so far fetched I skipped many pages. Junior, the other main character stating he would been a great daddy to Alex if only her mother would have married him and then in the next sentence begging her to have sex with him!!!! This is the first time reading Sandra Brown and I won't pick up another book by this author.

How could, a strong and savvy woman like Alexandra fall for a man from her mother's past 18 years her senior. The characters in this book were just empty. The beginning of the book was fine but the more I got into it the more it just plain got tiring. Alex was just irritating at times when she was interviewing witnesses in her mother's murder, not the type of behavior you expect from an attorney leading an investigation. For such a strong woman she acted like a child. This story could have been so much more suspenseful but it just fell short. And the last sentences in the book... "Say it, Reede." "Be my woman." Really, this is what she wanted to hear from this man.

Did you ever read a book and not want it to end but found yourself turning the pages one after the other because you wanted to see what happened next. That's how I was with this book. I had read this book years ago and wanted it for my own collection but wanted to read it again, and again I wasn't disappointed. I loved these characters, from the sheriff, Reed Lambert to the Mintons, Angus and his son Junior, even the secondary characters are so ingrained in the plot of the story that they literally stop being secondary as the story evolves. That is in part to the writing of Sandra Brown, it is exceptional.
The story is this, A young woman who is now a prosecutor for a prestigious law firm has for a lifetime believed that one or all three men, the sheriff, or the Mintons murdered her beautiful mother, as was told to her by the grandmother who raised her. She is convinced of their guilt and so the story begins.
If you like great writing, unforgettable characters, this is the book for you.
I bought this book yesterday and I was so disappointed in it I can't even describe it. The main character is supposed to be a brilliant attorney but instead she is brash, clueless, and having a sexual affair with someone that her mother had an affair with before she was born??? This was so uncomfortable to read and the creep factor was woven throughout the whole first nine chapters. That is when I had already figured out who the murderer was and decided I'd read more than enough. This book is depressing from page one and very quickly becomes icky. I did read the last few pages to see if my guess was correct about the murderer... I was. A very disappointing book!
