Paint and Paper in Decoration, courtesy of Rizzoli. Once you've chosen your color scheme, it's easy to roll it out into other rooms that are adjacent. You can accomplish this by simply varying the instrument of design that you use. In one room you might have paint, in the next you might have wallpaper, and in the room after that you might have fabric or tiles on the walls, and so on-all using similar tones.

Paint and wallpaper are usually the least expensive element in any interior design yet also the most difficult to get right. This book simplifies the process, using Oliver’s simple, straightforward but extremely stylish approach to color and light. David Oliver’s use of color in interior design has brought him both great acclaim and a star-studded roster of private clients. This is his first book, and it functions as a master class in paint, paper, and light. He shows what works and why by demonstrating how the combined influences of light and pigment affect the changing quality of color in a room. In his designs, Oliver seeks to recreate the unique vitality and depth of color found in fine art pigments by using the finest ingredients and technology available today. The book also explores his tonal color-by-number system for ceilings, cornices, walls, and woodwork, creating a harmonious balance of light and color by accentuating various interior elements in a room. It combines an array of practical ideas and planning advice with actual case studies making it an inspirational reconsideration of color for anyone interested in interior design.

For those interested in the historic use of colour in interior decoration, this is a very useful guide. Based on his own range of paints, author David Oliver explains what inspires him, dividing his chapters by colour. It is particularly interesting that he shows how the colours look in daylight and artificial light - although the printed medium is never 100% accurate -, and I found the chapters on historic styles and how to reproduce them using colours extremely helpful. He communicates his ideas with enthusiasm and clarity, backing them up with lovely and sometimes unexpected images. One example is a photo of a Chinese record cover in buff and red that inspired one colour scheme. The structure of the book is good, too, presenting chapters on inspiration, practical interpretation, colour associations, and so on. I would certainly recommend this as both a source of inspiration and a practical, "historically correct" guide to using paint and wallpaper in the home.

David Oliver explains his inspirations for colors and how he believes they should be used. Some of this "educational" text was jaw-droppingly basic like his explaining of the basic color wheel. Some of the images he used were beautiful, but most were not transferable to a normal home. A lot of sales-pitching for his products, but even then I would have loved to have seen some papers (they were only talked about in text, never shown). Most useful were his detailed outlines of how he uses color in a specific interior (i.e. Georgian style or modern) which is the last, and not very long, chapter. Three stars might be generous, but I think he did convince me of some color principles that I would have strayed foolishly from on my own.
Still In Mind
Excellent book for color inspiration
