Roses : Placing Roses, Planting and Care, the Best Varieties. by Philip Edinger and Sunset Magazines & Books.

This Ortho book explained everything I wanted to know about roses. Very nice book for someone like me just beginning to learn about roses and the care of roses. I had just gotten a rose from Jackson & Perkins in the autumn (I thought I was going to get it in the spring so I was very surprised) with a couple of roses on it and roots. After I got the book, I did exactly what it stated plus the fact that J&P said to leave it outside for three days in the shade for acclimation. It now has a polystyrene cover for the winter plus mulch. One person found this helpful.

As a quick reference and general overview of the basics, this book is hard to beat. If you need help figuring out how to care for your current roses, this book can definitely help you identify the cause of various problems (the illustrated pages showing how to identify various pests/diseases/growth issues are particularly useful) as well as basic treatment. As I haven't tried to plant any new roses (though I have had to transplant a few), I can't speak to the usefulness or accuracy of the final section detailing different recommended roses, but the rest of the book definitely makes up for this.

This book was a gift to good friends that are building a rose garden however after I received the book and went through it, I decided that I needed this book as well so there is another copy in the mail. Excellent pictures with explanations on all types of bugs or infestations that can affect the blooms. I clearly recommend it especially for people that are not as up to date on what we should and shouldn't do to our precious roses.

I really like Sunsets books, they are always helpful and practical. This one is just that, and it is loaded with beautiful pictures and helpful drawings. I have never seen a Sunset book I didn't like. I am glad I bought this one on Roses, it discussed correct placement, planting and care. It also has a section on recommended roses and their descriptions.

Like it. Informative enough for what I needed to now--general rose information. Guess there roses grown today have new names. Could not find a lot of the new rose names of the ones grown today. Just mostly old classic roses--Not many of the new breeds of roses. YET STILL INFORMATIVE.

Wanted to start a rose garden and get several types of rose varieties and shapes.
This little book helps a lot. It also seems like this material is in the 365 Days of Garden Color
book of Sunset along with zillions of other perennials. Anyway, my rose selections are coming
with bare root season. This enabled me to discern what to get and soon, how to take care of my babies.

'Wasn't sure this book was going to be worth getting, but given that it was from the editors of Sunset Magazine, I took a chance. It's very practical, well-organized and well-illustrated. I learned the basic vocabulary of roses, how to do cuttings, and how to care for them without a lot of fuss.

The new editions of "Sunset Roses" is by far superior to the previous edition. There are many good rose books out there however the "casual gardener" can get easily overwhelmed with their amount of information.
"Sunset Roses" is easy to follow, quick reading and reference that makes you feel "I can do that". Of particular interest is the section on what roses grow the best in the different U.S.D.A. Climatic Zones.
Received book in great condition. Very informative for the new rose gardener.
