I'm the author of two rose books. The first, an anthology titled "The Poetry of Roses" came about as kind of a dream come true, better than a fairy tale, gift type thing. My second book, "R is for Rose" required ten years of passionate dedication and intense learning.

Carolyn Parker was born and raised in Houston, TX but eventually found herself in Salt Lake City, UT. While attending the University of Utah, Carolyn discovered a passion for photographing animals. Her first book, "Hedgehog Wisdom: Little Reasons to Smile," showcases her quirky sense of humor and her attitude towards positivity and wellness.

In R is for Rose, photographer, author and avid gardener Carolyn Parker takes us on a journey through the alphabet...with roses. Inspired by the beauty of 'Rouletii,' Parker formed a letter R with its flowers, leaves and branches, and soon a rose alphabet was born.

The roses are photographed growing in Parker's own garden or in gardens she has visited around the world, and in stunning arrangements made by her own hand. Each rose shines with its own unique and intriguing beauty through her lens.

Whether recounting the history of Hybrid Teas, interviewing renowned rosarian Graham Stuart Thomas, or describing the sound of 'Pristine' dropping her petals, Parker shares her love of roses in a deeply personal way. The stories of the history and life of each rose gives way to stories that reflect the history and life of each human being. Be it birth, death, creativity, or beauty, human concerns look thoughtfully different when viewed through the lens of a rose lover.

Carolyn Parker is my rose guru. I have had the great luck to visit one of her garden tours and see some of these beauties up close. This book prompted me to augment my 200 roses with some of the special ones she mentions. Her website rose notes and FB page are really wonderful too.

I did not research the "R for Rose" good enough. There must be several books like this, but it was not the book I wanted. I donated it to our city library.

This is a beautiful book that offers much more than the usual coffee table book. It is filled with gorgeous photos and helpful information about the history of rose cultivation, growing your own roses and creating arrangements. There are delightful vignettes from the Author, Carolyn Parker. There are many examples of floral bouquets and suggestions for creations to make from your own garden. It is well worth buying for yourself or as a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys roses.
I thought I would post this bit of an email from my sister. It is a lovely tribute to the power of the rose and how well it is caputred in Carolyn Parker's book.

R is for Rose is Carolyn Parker's unique tribute to her passion for the rose. It is a lovely book with wonderful photography, heartfelt prose and a wealth of information about rose varieties. Rosarians will love the book and those with milder affections will savor the views of gardens and species roses. Her photography is fantastic and her design aesthetic is sharp, inventive and compelling--the floral arrangements and set shots are gorgeous. My favorite element is the rose alphabet--what a fantastic idea and what a clever play on the physical qualities of each species.
