As a new California gardener, I can't say enough good things about this book. The year is broken down by season, month, and week and discusses every type of planting and their ideal times.

He lived near me in West Los Angeles and spoke at my garden club. As a new California gardener, I can't say enough good things about this book. An absolutely wonderful resource and very easy to understand. How this ever went out of print, I'll never know.

This book, along with "52 Weeks in the California Garden" are great for those of us who have no idea what "first frost" is. The book is specifically for Southern California but anyone in the state will find this book more useful than 99% of gardening books which talk about winter, snow. 52 Weeks in the California Garden. Los Angeles Times California Gardening: A Practical Guide to Growing Flowers, Trees, Vegetables, and Fruits.

52 Weeks in the California Garden by Robert Smaus is the trusty book longtime Angelenos refer to when planting their gardens-it’s as much a handy garden tool as the trowel. For instance, fava beans and radishes in the fall, basil and parsnips in the spring.

52 Weeks in the Garden by Robert Smaus is a well rounded book of ideas for the garden. There are excellent lists for difficult areas and situations in the garden. It is nice to have the tasks broken out by the season. I commiserated with the author on many of the weeds and pests that we both have faced.

Mid-South Gardening is the definitive guide to growing vegetables in the Middle South (Zones 6-7 of Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina). Over a century of intensive farming of corn, cotton, and soybeans have destroyed many of the soils of this region, such that vegetable gardeners often have to contend with depleted soils, soils without any topsoil remaining, or soils contaminated with weedkillers and pesticides.

I heard about this book and read reviews about it. The author (Robert Smaus) has long since passed away but he wrote the gardening section for the LA Times newspaper for many years. He has lots of experience and it's really enjoyable to read his book. It has lots of extra things that gives you a much broader perspective when it comes to gardening. Sort of like having a very wise old Gardner by your side giving you sage advice.

i had purchased several gardening books over the past 2 years and was finally turned to this book after attending a gardening class (through U.C. extension). it was totally different than any of the books i read in that it was MEANT for our special (and amazing) Los Angeles climate. in the first chapter alone i was shocked to see how different our planting season was as compared to the rest of the U.S. yes, yes, i knew that our mild climate allowed for a different timeline of gardening, but as a novice i had continued to follow the information on seed packets and general gardening books for our zone (and ended up with a lot of bolting plants!!!). it may not be as detailed and specific as other gardening books (i.e. the vegetable gardener's bible), but the overall layout (follows the entire year beginning with the fall) is great for a newer gardener in the l.a. area. i've been using the more detailed information on each plant from other gardening books, but following the "schedule" of this book. the entire book is in black/white with no color images. it includes input/advice from reader's of the author's column and i love knowing that these master gardeners in my "neighborhood" have to share.

I have purchased many of these books for my friends. It is now out of print, which is unfortunate. Robert Smaus was the LA Times gardening editor for many years. He lived near me in West Los Angeles and spoke at my garden club. This book is great. It is set up by seasons, and is an easy to read helpful book for the home gardener. His writing includes interviews with landscapers, growers and garden enthusiasts. Often books are general and don't fit for Southern California's Mediterranean climate. He covers many parts of Southern California, so you do not have to live in Los Angeles to appreciate this book.
My copy is very worn!

I have been trying to get a good vegetable garden for a few years now. Couldn't understand what why I was getting sub-par results. I read the book and it did give me good insights as to how we should proceed in so.cal. I will be trying for a winter garden starting in Sept. this year. Let me see how it progresses. I like the list of what should be planted when and how to fertilize and other tips.

Update: I got a wonderful winter garden with Carrot, beets, greens and other good stuff. I also got a wonderful summer garden with tomatoes, eggplants, and other tropical veggies. Return on Investment very high.

This book is the first book on the subject that was useful as far as planting times. Those of us living in this area can't rely on "2 months from first frost" for planting times, living near the coast, I can't remember the last time ive even seen frost. This book is quite helpful in this area, and has a lot of great information. I found it used for 1 cent before shipping, but I would have gladly paid full price for a new book if I had to.

Just as I hoped, good information on the southern California garden.
If you are tired of gardening advice that's good on the East Coast, but doesn't work in Southern California, this is the book for you. It provides real solutions for our unique climate, advice from local professionals, and a reliable planting schedule. This book and Sunset Magazine's Western Garden Book are all you need for successful gardening in Southern California. And in spite of the tone of this review, I have no affiliation whatsoever with the author or publisher :)
