John Strong's "The Experience of Buddhism" obviously borrows heavily in idea and form from Stephen Beyer's 1970s text "The Buddhist Experience," and it's been updated a bit to include new texts on developing trends in Buddhist thought. Strong maintains acceptable historical objectivity within the context of a sympathetic presentation, allowing the reader to draw independent conclusions. Any student of Buddhism will benefit from this book.

If you want to read yourself out of Buddhism this is a great book for you. I gave it five stars because it does not get much better than this in terms of scholarship and readability. The book takes the reader on a journey through the history of Buddhism with primary sources, commentary and suggested reading for further study. I completed this book with the sensation that I could leave the subject with a clean slate and move on to some other topic having been given a great overview and detailed analysis of the history of Buddhism.

A wonderful read, I would recomend this book to anyone wanting to achive a deeper understanding of the teachings of the Buddha and the dissemination of that teaching in the years after his death. Although it is a textbook it is not cumbersome or difficult to read.

As much as reading such books is enlightening to a female teenager this book gave her a good insight to the teachings of Buddhism.
Perdana
Excellent introduction to the study of Buddhism for high school and undergraduate students.

Required text for Buddhist Studies class I took at Queens College, and was very interesting. Teacher was excellent as well as texts, and I learned a lot of the basics in a very hard to define philosophy/religion.

It is an excellent text which is required for a correspondence course I am taking on Buddhism which is taught by a fellow who has degrees from both Oxford and Harvard universities.

My teacher has taken out so many parts of this book for further reading I had to get it. Very comprehensive.
Highly outdated from the mindset of those first euro pioneers to the east. Not everything is like the west. Get over it and figure it out.
