I have been teaching Western Civilization for almost twenty years and have, at one time or another, assigned many of Spielvogel's competitors. But once I adopted Spielvogel I have consistently used it and recommended to my adjuncts that they do the same. It is the best Western Civ. text on the market. The author strikes a very good balance between being comprehensive without drowning students in detail. All of the chapters are strong, which is a big reason that I use the book.

Best-selling text, WESTERN CIVILIZATION has helped over one million students learn about the present by exploring the past. Jack Spielvogel's engaging, chronological narrative weaves the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, and military aspects of history into a gripping story that is as memorable as it is instructive. Each chapter offers a substantial introduction and conclusion, providing students a context for these disparate themes. The clear narrative of a single gifted author makes it easy for students to follow the story of Western civilization. Spielvogel gives the book depth by including over 150 maps and excerpts of over 200 primary sources--including official documents, poems, and songs--that enliven the past while introducing students to source material that forms the basis of historical scholarship. I rented both the hardcopy and the kindle version for my history 101 class.

In the kindle version the maps are INCOMPLETE. For instance, the map on page 120 correctly identifies the "Baths of Nero" in the hard copy version. The kindle version however identifies it as "aths o ero". These kinds of mistakes are on every single map in every single chapter so far. Another one is "China" on pg 117 in the kindle version it shows "C I A".

Another problem I've found is places where documents are shown from other sources such as on page 126 where a selection is taken from against Celsus by Origen of Alexandria, in the hard copy there's the actual block of text where Origen defends the value of Christianity. In the kindle version you get a gray square where the text should be and a message that says, "Text not available due to copyright restrictions". If I hadn't had the hardcopy I would have missed a couple of test questions.

It makes me apprehensive about using kindle for textbooks in the future.
The kindle version of this book is garbage. The text is ripped from the actual book and pasted into the kindle app. The chapter headings, chapter partitions and additional reading are all the same size and font as the rest of the text making it super hard to read. There is no reference to which page or chapter you are currently on, so if you are using this for a class referencing the book is a nightmare. Trying to even find what chapter you are on requires flipping through the pages until you reach the beginning of a chapter and hopping that you do not miss it, because the chapter introduction looks like the rest of the text. There are several sources documents that are removed from the Kindle version of the book, meaning that if you need to review that document in the book you are screwed. Worst $20 I have ever spent, a badly photocopied PDF version of the book would be 100 times better than this "official kindle" version.
As far as books on Western Civilization go, this is the bookiest of all the books. It's pages are most papery while maintaining a very covery cover too. If you're looking for a very collegy kind of college book then I would highly recommend this book. It was exactly what my son needed for his college class, especially knowing that his instructor was pretty clear and concise on getting this particular book.
Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.

Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.
I actually love this book. First, I used it to prepare for the Western Civ 1 CLEP (I will be using it for Western Civ 2 CLEP, as well). I read once through with a hi-liter and then I did three practice tests from petersons.com. I passed the CLEP with a 70 (out of 80).
Second, I found it to be very interesting!!! This author did such a good job of presenting a timeline, so that I could organize the ideas easily in my head. This is obviously necessary if you are to keep your facts straight. He did a better job than the history books I have read previously (high school mainly). He also took great care to regularly present the status of women, slaves and minorities (or oppressed majorities) throughout the book and even included very interesting blurbs of ancient writings to illustrate many of these things. I learned more about the status of WOMEN in the history of Western Civ, than I ever have in any other book before. And it was all there organized for me.
I am a military history/studies major, and I have already used this book once to familiarize myself with the Punic Wars, for a project. It really helped me get a basic grip on it, and provided quite a bit of what I needed to know.

I really like this book. ;)
This is an extremely detailed book that goes in-depth on many different topics. It does a good job with setting down the basics and allows the professor to build on it. My history professor used the textbook as a guideline to build up on the material and make each topic a story. Since the class was a lecture, if I missed anything, I could always reference the book again.
I used this book to help me pass the CLEP test for Western Civilization II along with the REA test prep books and passed with no problem. The book was easy to read and very entertaining at the same time. I'm not a big history buff but the author and the format of the book kept my interest to the point where I WANTED to read the book! The author explained the background surrounding historical events and provided more than dry facts and dates - if you need to pass Western Civ this is the book to get!
This book was required for my Western Civilization class, and it is worth reading outside of class.
