Virgil Thomson was an American composer, conductor, and music critic, whose forward-looking ideas stimulated new lines of thought among contemporary musicians. January 25, 1896 (age 93). Kansas City, Missouri, United States. Thomson's youthful acquaintance with American folk songs and Baptist hymns later gave him important material in his compositions. A fellowship enabled him to study in Paris for a year with the distinguished pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. Thomson lived in Paris from 1925 until World War II, visiting the United States periodically.

Virgil Thomson (November 25, 1896 – September 30, 1989) was an American composer and critic. He was instrumental in the development of the "American Sound" in classical music.
