The book was published in 1988 before Pinochet left power so the story is incomplete. The second half of the book is frankly a slog. It gets into weeds in its discussion of how the military was used and changed so that Pinochet could maintain his authority

In Latin America, an enormous amount of power is concentrated in the presidency (Vanden and Prevost 2006). In their notes on studying politics in Latin America they described that in the beginning of the twentieth century in Chile large landowners were dominant economically and could use this base to influence/dominate the political process -a fact which is still visible in the urban realm in twenty-first century Barranquilla as I tried to show. A repercussão negativa do atentado contra Pinochet, em 1986, e a vitória do "não" no plebiscito de 1989 sobre a continuidade da ditadura 3 favoreceram a via de transição pacífica e a mobilização em torno da abertura institucional.

Politics of Latin America has many excellent features and is probably the single best hybrid of thematic and country approaches. -Philip Meeks, Creighton University. This outstanding overview balances major comparative themes with selected Latin American case studies written by country experts. Analysis of the region's historical context, social structure (highlighting class, race, gender, religion and family), political economy, regime transitions, social/political movements, and global context make this an ideal text for undergraduate courses in Latin American politics, sociology, and history.
Pinochet: The Politics Of Power. Pinochet: The Politics Of Power. An exceptionally well-informed and carefully presented analysis of how, in one of Latin America's best-established democracies, General Augusto Pinochet was able to impose a solidly entrenched military dictatorship; how and why the Pinochet regime endured so long; and why by the late 1980s the opposition realized that it would have to play by the dictator's own rules, however. illegitimate, to have any chance of ending the regime.

Latin America states and for global competitiveness. The Latin American political elites have been actively promoting racial mixing, mythologized ideas of national (civic) unity, racial and ethnic homogeneity, and preferred to prevent ethnic and racial distinctions from appearing in the political discourse and in the official documents. However, the problems of race and ethnicity are still present in the national discourse and in the regional politics. ethnopolitical conflict; civilian nation; nationalism; politics of identity; civilizational identity; postimperial identity; ibero-americanism; federalism; decentralization; regional integration; transnational spaces; al approach.
