Duke was finally reunited with his family and General Morgan in Abingdon, Virginia. The reunion was short lived, however, as Morgan was just leaving for Jonesboro, TN, with 1500 men. It was the last time Duke saw the General until his body was returned by train to Carter's Station. John Hunt Morgan had been shot through the heart after surrendering to enemy forces on the early morning of September 4, in Greeneville, TN.
