A Gathering of Saints book. As he proved in The Falcon & the Snowman, Robert Lindsey is a masterful journalist with a genius for suspense & an unerring eye for provocative stories. A Gathering of Saints is an astonishing report on one of this century's most puzzling, cunningly executed crimes.

The Falcon and the Snowman: A True Story of Friendship and Espionage. Hoffman even tells exactly how he was technically able to accomplish his feats. Lindsey did excellent reporting on this incredible story. Irresistible Impulse. The Flight of the Falcon: The True Story of the Escape and Manhunt for America's Most Wanted Spy. Robert Lindsey.

A Gathering of Saints has been added to your Cart. I read it in two days. I loved the way the author doled out the details throughout the book to maintain suspense and gave personal insight into so many of the characters. Sure, Lindsey does not portray the LDS church in a very positive light, but the events he recounts were not really the church's Best Day Ever, were they? The author sometimes presents the church as a menacing hierarchy bent on controlling the plucky protagonists and making a deal with the devilish bad guys, but that is how every corporation is portrayed in every story these days.

A true story that reads like a great crime novel.

It is a small nod to convention in an otherwise engaging account.

A parallel story is The Mormon Murders, by Naifeh, Smith. The story of Mark Hoffman, a brilliant falsifier of church (LDS) memorabilia/history and the efforts of the church's leaders to spend good money to acquire these bogus documents (unsuspected by them, of course) in order to keep them out of public knowledge to prevent embarrassing details of history that might impugn the church's legitimacy as The True Church. Hoffman goes greedily over his head and buries himself in debt such that he feels killing someone (any one, he says) will at least slow down his fall. And he kills two people and is now serving several life sentences in state prison.

Great detective story of greed and fraud. Also raises questions about the Mormon hierarchy about trying to cover up the background of Joseph Smith.Read this one many years ago, but tried it again. Fascinating insight into how historical documents can be forged. Makes you wonder about other historical documents.
Freighton
