The Story of the Extraordinary Italian Artistic And Spiritual Community. Published November 10, 2006 by Hanford Mead Publishers.

Damanhur, is an eco-society based on ethical and spiritual values . Extract from: The story of the Extraordinary Italian Artistic and Spiritual Community.

Damanhur, is an eco-society based on ethical and spiritual values, awarded by an agency of the United Nations as a model for a sustainable future. Damanhur has centers and activities in Italy, Europe, Japan and the United States and collaborates with international organizations engaged in the social, civic and spiritual development of the planet.

The Damanhur Temples are a masterwork of human invention, inspiration and dedication. I would like the leaders of the world to come to Damanhur and objectively study how a thousand people from different countries work together and create an environment worth emulating. Damanhur must be better known in the world, because the world is looking for a model for the survival of the world.

In Italy, almost 30 years ago, a group of people dug deep into an Alpine mountainside and built the remarkable Temples of Humankind at Damanhur. These Temples are an extraordinary work of art that has been described as ‘an Eighth Wonder of the World’. The Temples are just one of the extraordinary achievements of the people of the Federation of Damanhur. A United Nations award-winning sustainable community, Damanhur is an eco-society based upon ethical and spiritual values. In creating community, Damanhur has drawn on ancient knowledge, esoteric traditions, and modern research to promote a culture of peace and balanced development through solidarity, volunteering, a respect for the environment, and social and political commitment. Damanhurians participate in cutting edge research in such fields as contemporary science, healing, the structure of time, and the interaction with intelligent energies. Damanhur has a system of community that effectively balances encouragement for individuals to reach their highest potential, with an enlightened, democratic structure to provide for the common good. This edition adds extensive updates about the Federation of Damanhur and illustrates Merrifield’s description for the first time with 152 black and white photos (there are also 8 pages of color plates as well) that show the human face of this community’s incredible accomplishments. A table of contents, extensive index, and a table of illustrations make the book user-friendly to those who want to find out about certain areas of Damanhur’s metaphysical and biological research, art, financial system, political involvement, unique system of healing, education, or the biosustainable, intentional community at Damanhur. Damanhur is a place where dreams are realized, where ideas beyond reason are given a chance, and where very often they become a reality. This is the story of how and why this can happen.

Recommended reading especially if you plan a visit to this extraordinary community. I have just returned from Damanhur and this book gives great details.

This book is the most complete and comprehensive source of information on Damanhur that I have come across. A must read for any person interested in knowing about this community in detail. What's more, it is in English which is ideal for English speaking people interested in Damanhur, because currently English info on this community is relatively limited.

Having recently lived at Damanhur for one month, and also considering moving there, I was interested in known as much as possible about the community on many levels. Speaking almost no Italian I found it hard to get detailed information on Damanhur from the people there. Not because they are not helpful (quite the opposite) but simply because there are so many people, spread out over a wide area, and each informed person deals with different aspects of the community, and many don't speak a lot of English. Simply put, getting a clear picture of Damanhur (the people, the history, the way of life, etc. etc.) was proving slow to say the least. After one month I knew little more than I had already obtained from Damanhur info on the Internet.

This book came to the rescue. Big time.

It covers a broad range of topics related to life at Damanhur. Such as the artwork, the temples, their social structure, how it came to be, the founder, their spiritual views, their rituals, their economic structure, the Seven Ways (spiritual paths for those living in Damanhur), and many other topics.

I found this book to be both thorough in its exploration and very objective. The author has conducted many interviews and part or full transcriptions of many of these are included in the book. The book also has 8 full page colour photos and many black and white photos throughout.

If you are interested in knowing more about Damanhur in detail then this is the book to buy and read. ALso, beyond just learning more about Damanhur, this book is a must read for any person interested in Intentional Community. Perhaps you wish to live in one or start one? Damanhur is most certainly one of the most successful and longest standing community projects I know of in the world and therefore has a lot to offer in terms of how to go about establish a functional and long-term community.

If this book and its topic matter is something which interests you (especially if the colour photos in this book leave you begging for more) then I think you'll also be pleased to read:
Damanhur: Temples of Humankind

If you have not already taken a look at the Temples of Humankind website, go to [...] and take a look. If you can get to Italy to see them in person at Damanhur, I highly recommend it.
