Although this book manages to recreate the feeling of science fiction magazines from the 60s, a crucial difference is that it doesn't contain any good stories.

In those days (when I was a kid, I got a couple of old science fiction magazines to read) each edition had one or two good stories - sometimes real gems - and a number of passable or bad stories.

This book got only the passable or bad stories.

I would have given it half a star, if that was possible.

In view of the comments by Mr. Luce ("Ringo"), where he mentioned my review, I'd like to explain that in fact my text about Science Fiction Gems Vol. 3 is exactly the same as the one for Vol. 2 because my feeling is the same regarding both books. I read both of them, from beginning to end, and I was disappointed with both (including with "Rat In The Skull"). It should be mentioned that I like science fiction a lot, and have read lots of it.

But, as Mr. Luce pointed out, people's tastes about books do differ, and I wish him success with the publishing of this collection.

I just finished reading two of the Armchair Science Fiction Gems collections, Volume One and Volume Two, and while they're both good, this is definitely the best of the two. I read everything in this collection except for the Philip Jose Farmer tale and they are all very good stories. But the real standout here was Rog Phillips' "Rat in the Skull." This was a very unusual (even a little grim) sci-fi tale, which seems to be very topical today because part of the story is about bullying. The Ed Emsh cover--which illustrates this story--is beautiful. I know this particular story was nominated for either a Hugo or a Nebula Award and it's easy to see why. The Silverberg and Kornbluth tales were also standouts.
